Saint-Domet: Chapel, Church Art and Hiking
Accommodation in Saint-Domet
Saint-Domet brings together sacred history and hiking as two distinct travel highlights. The Chapelle de La Croix au Bost and the Eglise St-Domet represent different historical heritage; a 17-kilometre stage of the GRP® runs from Peyrat-la-Nonière to Saint-Domet. The regional hiking trail network also offers a broader perspective. This brings architectural and art history together with a clearly defined hiking stage.
Chapelle de La Croix au Bost
The Chapelle de La Croix au Bost is the surviving chapel of a former commandery of the Hospitallers. It was extensively remodelled in the 18th century and also houses an ensemble dating from the 17th century in the form of an altarpiece. An altarpiece is an altar screen. The dates therefore differ: the ensemble dates from the 17th century, while the remodelling took place in the 18th century. This makes it possible to distinguish between older furnishings and a later structural alteration.
The chapel has been classified as a historic monument since 25 September 1989. This date refers to its classification, not to a period of construction: it came well after the 17th-century ensemble and the 18th-century remodelling. The chapel is open year-round, but opening hours are not currently guaranteed. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Eglise St-Domet
The Eglise St-Domet contains a 15th-century seated statue of the Virgin and Child and a statue of Saint Domet dating from the late 17th to the 18th century. The figures differ both in subject and in date. The statue of the Virgin dates from the 15th century; the statue of the saint is considerably later.
A horseshoe-shaped reliquary was intended to hold the saint’s jawbone; it is not on public display. Unlike the two statues, the reliquary is a container with a specific religious function. The three objects can be distinguished by subject and function: two figurative depictions on the one hand, and the reliquary as a container on the other.
GRP® Stages and the Regional Hiking Context
The GRP® Boucle coeur de Creuse loop includes a 17-kilometre stage from Peyrat-la-Nonière to Saint-Domet. The start and end points and the distance define a specific section. In the broader regional context, the GRP® Marche et Combraille en Aquitaine comprises four long-distance hiking loops totalling 375 kilometres. The 17 and 375 kilometres represent different planning scales: the length of a single stage and the total length of four loops.
Saint-Domet church is also one of the sights and points of interest along the GRP® Boucle du Franc-Alleu. This provides another named hiking connection to the commune, in addition to the Boucle coeur de Creuse stage. Route details may change; check local trail conditions before setting out.
Hotel and Trip Planning
If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Domet, you can plan your trip around your main interest: the chapel and the sacred artworks in the Eglise offer cultural history, while the 17-kilometre stage provides a specific hiking option. This helps you clearly define the purpose of your trip before choosing a hotel.
