Discover Château-Chervix
Accommodation in Château-Chervix
When looking for hotels in Château-Chervix, it helps to start by asking which aspects of the area interest you most. The landscape and trails are one focus; the local history, with its churches, chapel and medieval tower, is another. When planning your stay, you can weigh up whether you want to explore the named trails and heathlands or focus primarily on the architectural and local history.
Heathlands, trails and the Étang
The heathlands of Cluzeau and de la Flotte are protected by a biotope protection order and listed as a Type I ZNIEFF; they have been proposed for inclusion in the Natura 2000 network. As protection designations may be updated in law, check their current status if this is of particular interest to you. The heathlands are also notable for the most significant serpentinite outcrop in Limousin.
Two named trails offer different points of interest. The Sentier de la forêt de Fayat passes the Puy de Bar chapel and its viewpoint; the short circular trail at Badassat offers the chance to discover the Pierre des morts. When choosing between the trails, you can compare the chapel and viewpoint featured on the Sentier with the discovery of the Pierre des morts on the short circular trail.
The Étang du Puychaumartin is two kilometres from the town centre and covers about 1.8 hectares. It is equipped for fishing and swimming. Seasonal regulations for both activities may change; check them before your visit. The trails and heathlands are therefore complemented by another landscape option, with different activities and its own seasonal conditions.
Local history and architecture
Château-Chervix is one of the oldest vici—that is, settlements—in Limousin, dating from Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. A later landmark is the medieval tower: it is the former keep of a motte-and-bailey castle built by the Viscount of Limoges in the 12th century. A keep is the main tower of a castle. Until it fell into disrepair in the 16th century, the keep was the seat of local administrative, tax and judicial authority.
The area around the medieval tower is closed to the public during restoration work. Take this closure into account when planning your visit and check access conditions before travelling.
The religious buildings represent different periods of construction: the Church of Saint Sylvain du Chateau is a Romanesque building from the 11th century, with a single nave and two side chapels; the Chapel of Notre Dame de Puy de Bar was built in 1860 following a vow and restored in 1950. A nave is the main space of a church; side chapels extend the building as adjoining rooms. This helps put the different architectural forms and dates of the two religious buildings into context.
Local production
Food production is another aspect of local life: at Fournil du Petit Gueulard, organic sourdough bread is made and baked in a wood-fired oven. Together with the information about the trails, heathlands and historic buildings, this gives a picture of Château-Chervix that encompasses nature, local history and local production.
