La Porcherie – Heritage, Heathland and Trails
Accommodation in La Porcherie
La Porcherie offers several options for your stay: heritage, countryside and activities by the water. If you are looking for a hotel in La Porcherie, you can first decide whether architectural history, nature or the Étang des Pierres du Mas will shape your itinerary.
Heritage and Local History
The Église Saint-Julien et Saint-Roch was listed as a Monument historique on October 10, 1980. Its main construction phases date from the 12th, 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. This span of time gives you a concrete insight into the church building’s long history.
The nave of the Église Saint-Julien-de-Brioude et Saint-Roch contains several polychrome wooden statues and Stations of the Cross panels, donated by the d’Arsonval family in 1883. The Musée Arsène d’Arsonval in La Porcherie presents scientific heritage connected with Arsène d’Arsonval. The Sentier du Bourg also focuses on him: this trail explores the town’s heritage at six stops.
The Motte castrale de Chateauvieux is a different kind of historic site. The castle mound is about 50 metres wide and 4 to 8 metres high, and is surrounded by a defensive ditch. Its dimensions and the ditch make the site’s form easy to visualise, without requiring you to plan a longer series of buildings to visit.
Heathland, Views and Trails
The Landes serpentinicoles des Pierres du Mas cover about 20 hectares. This heathland is home to the only site of field gentian in the Limousin. From the highest point, there are views of the Monédières and Mont Gargan. Alongside its flora, the site also brings two named landscape destinations into view.
When choosing a trail, you can choose between different focuses: the Sentier du Bourg explores the town’s heritage at six stops and focuses on Arsène d’Arsonval. The La lande des Pierres du Mas interpretive trail, by contrast, passes through a protected natural area. It is 1.28 kilometres long and rated moderate. This lets you plan for local history and a specific hiking route as separate interests.
Activities at the Étang
Fishing with a rod is the main activity at the Étang des Pierres du Mas. Several events are also held there each year, including fishing competitions and flea markets. If you are planning a visit for fishing or an event, check the current fishing regulations in advance and confirm the local dates.
Getting to La Porcherie
La Porcherie is 10 kilometres from the A20 motorway and is served by the Paris–Limoges–Toulouse railway line. If travelling by train, check the timetable for your chosen journey. The distance from the motorway and the railway line offer different reference points for getting there as you plan your stay.
