Meilhac: Bocage Countryside and Sacred Heritage
Accommodation in Meilhac
Meilhac combines rural bocage countryside with a long circular route and sacred heritage.
Countryside and Walking Trail
Meilhac retains a rural bocage landscape: fields and meadows are still extensively bordered by hedgerows and rows of trees. These boundaries shape the landscape and make the edges of fields and meadows a distinctive part of the local scenery. To explore the area on a longer route, you can follow Les sentiers de Meilhac. The circular trail starts in Meilhac and is 19.4 kilometres long. Since September 2015, it has been part of the Haute-Vienne département’s PDIPR hiking and walking trails plan.
The same route is estimated to take five hours on foot and one hour and 30 minutes by mountain bike. These time estimates make the difference between the two ways of getting around clear: considerably more time is allowed for walking than for the mountain bike option. When planning your day, you can take the estimated duration into account according to the activity you choose.
Church and Historical Heritage
Inside the Église Saint-Denis, one bay retains its original rib vault. A bay is a section of the church interior; there, the ribs of the vault meet at a keystone decorated with a lily. The church floor also has noteworthy features: it contains tombstones and the grave of an abbot. Together, these elements show different aspects of the area’s sacred history—architectural design as well as evidence of burial.
Opposite the church, an oval Gallo-Roman cippus is set into the wall surrounding the garden of the former presbytery. Its location is therefore distinct from the details inside the church: the cippus is outside the church, in the wall of this garden. When finding your way around Meilhac, you can see both the heritage inside the Église Saint-Denis and a historical object opposite the church building.
The Reliquary in Flavignac
The Châsse dite de sainte Valérie dates from the first quarter of the 13th century and is classified as a protected object. It is kept in the treasury of the parish church of Assomption-de-la-Très-Sainte-Vierge in Flavignac. This distinction is important when planning your visit: the features of the Église Saint-Denis and the cippus mentioned above are in Meilhac, whereas the reliquary is in Flavignac.
