Sainte-Anne-Saint-Priest: Churches, Chapel and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Sainte-Anne-Saint-Priest
The parish church, the Sainte-Anne Chapel, other historical landmarks and the Circuit des trois églises hiking trail are among the subjects that feature in the village’s history. When planning your trip, it is worth considering architectural history, pilgrimage and the hiking route as distinct points of interest. This will help you decide in advance whether you are most interested in architectural history, religious tradition, or the combination of churches and countryside on a hike.
Church and architectural history
The Sainte-Anne parish church was built in the 13th century and fitted with rib vaults in the 15th century. The construction and the addition of the vaults thus represent two separate phases in its architectural history. A rib vault is structured by intersecting ribs; the term refers to a specific architectural feature, not just to a period. The church stands at the highest point in the commune and offers views to the south and north. Its elevated position and the two viewing directions add a landscape perspective to the story of its construction.
Chapel, protected site and pilgrimage
The Chapelle Sainte-Anne-Saint-Priest and its hill form a protected site covering 15 hectares; it was protected by a ministerial decree dated 2 March 1945. The area refers to the protected site comprising the chapel and hill. The Sainte-Anne Chapel preserves traces of its former connection with the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights of Malta. A pilgrimage takes place at the chapel every 25 July, when pilgrims venerate a relic of Saint Anne. If the date matters for your trip planning, check the event date in advance.
Other historical landmarks
The former Sainte-Radegonde priory in Villevaleix was a Benedictine nunnery and was under the authority of Bonnesaignes Abbey. The church of the former priory is currently used as a stable and barn. Another landmark is the 17th-century Croix de Saint-Priest-Les-Vergnes. It bears a cross with three fleurons. Christ is shown in relief on the cross on one side, while a cross pattée appears in relief within a circle on the reverse. Comparing the two sides reveals two different designs on the same monument: a figurative depiction and a cross motif framed by a circle.
The Circuit des trois églises
The Circuit des trois églises incorporates the commune’s three historic churches into a hiking route. It runs through the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin, passing fountains, sunken lanes with dry-stone walls, forests, streams, viewpoints and small rural villages. The churches provide the route with a cultural and historical focus, while the landscape features describe the character of its surroundings. Sunken lanes and dry-stone walls are human-made features; forests, streams and viewpoints highlight other aspects of the route. If you would like to include a hike in your stay, this combination of churches and specific landscape features provides a basis for choosing an outing.
