Bulligny: Vineyards, Village History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Bulligny
Bulligny brings together a history of winegrowing, a historic château complex and two hiking trails with distinct characteristics.
Winegrowing and Landscape
Bulligny is one of the eight villages in the CĂ´tes de Toul AOC. The CĂ´tes de Toul AOC stretches for around 20 kilometres from north to south along the slopes of the Moselle Valley. This designation places Bulligny within a wider winegrowing area. The village itself is described as a Lorraine street village on a slope, surrounded by orchards. There is woodland on the spur of the slope, along with a cultivated plain.
Village Layout and Architectural Heritage
The architectural form typical of a Lorraine street village can be seen in two rows of adjoining houses lining a widened street. The street layout is therefore also part of the local architectural history. A barn doorway dating from 1626 is part of the historic heritage of this village layout.
Château de Tumejus
The construction of Château de Tumejus is probably linked to the marriage of the Countess of Graux and Dame de Tumejus to Ferri de Ligniville around 1432. Part of the Domaine du château de Tuméjus is listed as a historic monument. The decree of 13 February 1997 covers the château’s façades and roofs, the two walls forming a semicircle, the gateway and the fountain, as well as the entire park and its structural features and enclosures. The protected area thus includes other parts of the estate as well as the château.
Hiking Trails by Distance and Difficulty
The circular “L’Étrange Étang Bleu” hike starts in Bulligny. It is listed as 8 or 9.5 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and taking three to four hours. The section near Bulligny offers panoramic views over the southern Toulois and Pays de Colombey. Visibility may vary with the vegetation. Before setting out, also check the trail markings and access.
The “Entre vignes et forêts autour de Bulligny” hike is rated easy, is 9.75 kilometres long and has an estimated duration of three hours and 20 minutes. Its route passes through vineyards and woodland on the way to Étang de Létange. The route is accessible via Bulligny-Crézilles station; check current train services when planning your journey.
Both difficulty ratings and duration are useful when comparing the two trails: “L’Étrange Étang Bleu” is described as moderately difficult, while “Entre vignes et forêts autour de Bulligny” is rated easy. In terms of distance, the second is 9.75 kilometres, compared with a listed distance of 8 or 9.5 kilometres for the first.
