Montigny-Lès-Metz offers visitors a range of experiences, from sacred architectural history and historic artworks to several green spaces. For planning purposes, you can distinguish the sites by their historical period, artistic interest, area and explicitly stated uses.

Culture and History

The Château de Courcelles was restored from 2003 and officially inaugurated on 26 May 2005. Compared with the older religious buildings, this sequence marks a more recent historical point of reference. The Chapelle Saint-Privat is the first church in Montigny-lès-Metz and was built in the 9th century. From April to October, it is open to the public once a month. Check the specific dates in advance in the municipal events calendar. Unlike the historical dates associated with the château and Église Saint-Joseph, a specific opening date determines when to visit the chapel.

The Église Saint-Joseph was inaugurated on 29 July 1906, after three years of construction. It contains a wooden image of Christ from the 15th century; its frescoes are arranged in five large cycles. Chronologically, the image dates from a significantly earlier period than the church’s inauguration. Along with the arrangement of the frescoes, it offers another art-historical perspective alongside the building’s history. The construction period, artwork and arrangement of the frescoes are three distinct themes you can use to understand this site.

Green Spaces by Size and Focus

The Parc du château de Courcelles is classified as a woodland area. Its two-hectare grounds are used for family walks. Its size, classification and explicitly stated use give you several concrete points of comparison with the town’s other green spaces.

The Jardin devant-Blory is a 2.5-hectare municipal green space and is considered an example of biodiversity conservation. In direct comparison, it is half a hectare larger than the Parc du château de Courcelles. The stated focuses also distinguish the two spaces: the Parc is associated with its woodland classification and family walks, while the Jardin devant-Blory is a municipal green space focused on biodiversity. You can therefore consider the area alongside each site’s character, rather than comparing the two solely by size.

At 45 ares, the Jardin des Découvertes offers a smaller-scale setting. It is intended primarily for schoolchildren aged three to eleven. Its outdoor activities include a mini-golf course. Its age range and play facilities give it a different focus from the two larger spaces. Individual facilities may change; if mini-golf is important for your visit, check the current information in advance.
