Tellancourt offers several specific points of interest for travelers interested in architecture and local history. The church, chapel, wayside cross and washhouse differ in their architectural forms and historical context. Comparing their construction dates, dedications and memorials gives the town a cultural focus.

Church and chapel: different architectural forms

The Church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption dates from the 18th century. Its traditional structure includes a barn-like nave, a polygonal choir and a bell tower roof in the “à l'impériale” style. These technical terms refer to different architectural elements: the nave is the elongated main space, while “polygonal” describes the choir’s many-sided shape. The style descriptor “à l'impériale” refers to the bell tower roof, not the entire church building.

The Chapel of Notre Dame de Walcourt dates from the early 19th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is surrounded by a memorial plaque in honor of Abbé Vital Alexandre. The plaque honors him for his work; German soldiers executed him during the First World War. A statue of the Virgin Mary known as the “Vierge Noire” commemorates the 1957 mission.

Wayside cross and washhouse

The wayside cross on Rue de la Douane was erected during the 1900 mission. Its square shaft is topped by a broad capital decorated with putti. Together with the reference to the 1957 mission on the statue of the Virgin Mary, it highlights the difference in date between two religious memorials.

The arcaded washhouse also dates from the early 19th century. The chapel and washhouse therefore share the same historical context, but emphasize different features: the chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, while the washhouse is defined by its arcades. In Tellancourt, religious dedication and architectural design can thus be considered as distinct themes.

Hiking in Tellancourt and the region

Tellancourt’s municipal hiking club organizes hikes on Tuesdays. The meeting point is Place de l'Église at 1:30 p.m. If you plan to join during your stay, check the schedule again before you travel.

As part of the regional context, Terre Lorraine du Longuyonnais features 120 memorial walking routes tracing the Border Battle of August 1914. A guide brochure, map, mobile app and website are available to help with orientation; check which materials are currently available before planning. The focus on August 1914 is distinct from the local references to the missions of 1900 and 1957.
