Cattenom: Fortified Complex, Ossuary and Cultural Route
Accommodation in Cattenom
Cattenom offers several options for a trip focused on history: the Gros ouvrage du Galgenberg, a fortified structure with underground galleries; the ossuary at Place de la Fontaine; and a cultural route through three towns. You can focus on a single structure, a protected memorial site or a designated route. The places differ in both their layout and history, as well as in the extent of the route.
The Gros ouvrage du Galgenberg
The Gros ouvrage du Galgenberg was built between 1931 and 1936. Its structure comprises two entrances and six combat blocks linked by underground galleries. The galleries are therefore part of a connected complex; the six blocks are not described as independent sites. The complex also included an observatory on the hilltop, which was used to observe the Moselle Valley.
Combat blocks linked underground and an observatory at the summit represent two different aspects of the same structure: its internal layout and its orientation towards the Moselle Valley. If you are interested in the structure, the number of blocks and the way they are connected provide a concrete point of reference. The observatory was used to observe the Moselle Valley.
In 2026, tours of the Gros ouvrage were scheduled, among other times, for 11 November at 14:30 and 16:00. As this is a dated schedule, check the date before your trip.
The ossuary and Saint-Martin Church
The Cattenom ossuary is located beneath the cemetery chapel at Place de la Fontaine. Its construction campaign dates to 1723. It is protected as a Monument historique; it was listed under a decree dated 23 November 1987. The dates refer to different events: 1723 to the construction campaign, and 1987 to its protected status. When putting the site’s history in context, take care not to confuse these dates.
Saint-Martin Church in Cattenom is closed to the public because of structural damage. Do not plan a public visit inside. Check before visiting whether it is still closed.
A cultural route through three towns
The circular route “Circuit à vélo à travers le patrimoine local de Cattenom” is 12 km long. It passes through Cattenom, Husange and Sentzich and covers 30 cultural and historical sights. The route is designated for both cyclists and pedestrians. This makes it different in scope from visiting a single structure such as the Gros ouvrage or the ossuary: the focus here is on a named route, three place names and the cultural and historical sights along the way.
For your planning, the route’s 12-kilometre length and its designation for cyclists and pedestrians are key. This lets you choose between a route through several towns and a single historic structure. If you are especially interested in architectural history, the Gros ouvrage offers information about when it was built, its layout and its observatory; the ossuary, by contrast, has a clearly specified location and two distinct historical dates.
