Delme: Art, Church and Circular Trail
Accommodation in Delme
Delme offers several different starting points for planning a stay: contemporary art in a former synagogue, the neo-Gothic Church of Saint-Germain and a signposted circular walk. You can focus on art and architectural history or plan a hike. The 8.5-kilometre “Par monts et par voies” route connects Delme with Puzieux and Le Grand Sablon before returning to Delme.
Contemporary Art in the Former Synagogue
The Centre d’art contemporain – la synagogue de Delme is an institution of national importance. Its work includes exhibitions as well as artistic production and research. Its remit therefore extends beyond viewing finished works: artistic practice and its exploration are also part of its focus. If a particular exhibition is central to your trip, check the current programme in advance, as it may change.
The former synagogue was converted into a contemporary art museum. By decree of 8 October 1984, it was listed as a historic monument. Its conversion and listing shed light on different chapters in its history: its later cultural use and the building’s historic designation.
Saint-Germain and Delme’s Architectural History
Another place to visit is the Church of Saint-Germain. Built in 1859, the neo-Gothic church is an emblematic monument of Delme’s local heritage. Its architectural style and year of construction provide concrete clues to its historical context. In contrast to the art centre, the focus here is on architecture; both places offer different perspectives on culture and history in Delme.
Hiking the “Par monts et par voies” Route
The 8.5-kilometre “Par monts et par voies” route is a circular trail. It connects Delme, Puzieux and Le Grand Sablon, then returns to its starting point in Delme. On the way to Puzieux, the route follows a former Roman road and continues to the Notre-Dame de la Pitié chapel in Puzieux. The return leg follows a former railway line. This means that different historic routes form part of the trail.
The route is marked with yellow hiking trail signs. Before setting off, check the markings and trail conditions on site. The specific details about distance, route and wayfinding will help you plan the hike as a separate activity, rather than treating it as equivalent to the shorter visits to the cultural sites.
Regional Landscape
The CĂ´te de Delme nature reserve provides a distinct regional context. It covers just under 100 hectares between Juville, Liocourt, Puzieux and Xocourt. It reaches an elevation of 403 metres and offers panoramic views of the Saulnois and the Nied. The nature reserve has considerable landscape significance.
Your choice therefore depends on your preferred focus: art and architectural history, or a specific hiking route. If you would like to include both in your travel plans, you can check the changing exhibition programme and hiking trail conditions separately.
