Freyming-Merlebach brings together several different themes for a stay: mining history at the headframes and Reumaux shaft, the Wisselstein north of Merlebach, walking paths on a former industrial site, and cultural and wellness offerings. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on local history, the landscape, an event, or wellness. The themes differ considerably, ranging from specific historical dates to a seasonal cultural programme.

Culture and Mining History

The Carreau Cuvelette is a mining headframe site in Freyming-Merlebach. Its reinforced-concrete headframe was built between 1930 and 1932 for the Compagnie des Mines de Lens. Its heritage status is also precisely defined: since 22 October 1992, the southern headframe has been partially protected as a historic monument. This brings different periods together at the site: its construction in the early 1930s and the later protection of the southern headframe. It is important to note that this information applies to the headframe, not generally to every part of the mining site.

A serious hoisting accident occurred at Reumaux shaft on 26 March 1925: the cage came loose and fell 170 metres. Fifty-eight miners died and around 20 others were injured. Reumaux thus represents a different chapter of mining history from the Carreau Cuvelette: here, the focus is on a precisely dated accident and its consequences; there, on a mining site, its construction period and the partial heritage protection of its headframe.

The Wisselstein, a sandstone menhir 8 metres high and 4.5 metres wide, is located north of Merlebach. The stone is probably associated with the name Criemhilde-Spill, which appears in a 1354 document issued by Emperor Charles IV. This tentative historical connection sits alongside the specific information about the stone’s location and dimensions. A church building is also part of the town’s history: a new church was built between 1924 and 1926 under the former patronage of the Nativity of Mary.

Landscape and Walking Paths

The Carrière du Barrois offers a different focus. Nature has reclaimed this former industrial site, where paths have been laid out for walking. A pedestrian entrance is located near the Roseraie and the Reumaux housing estate. Check the current conditions at this entrance before your visit. This lets you plan your walk without simply assuming that access is currently available.

The Parc Municipal is also located on a former mining site, but its features offer a different focus: it has two pools, a variety of plantings featuring 30 tree species, and play areas for children. If you would like to include a visit to a park in your stay, you’ll find a specific combination of green spaces, water and play areas here. This sets the park apart from the Carrière du Barrois, whose walking paths run through a former industrial site.

Cultural Programme and Wellness

Le Gouvy is an events venue with 700 seats. Its seasonal programme features comedy, theatre, music and concerts. If an event is the reason for your trip, these categories can give you an idea of the types of performances on offer; check specific dates before travelling. The seasonal nature of the programme sets it apart from local history: construction periods and historical events have fixed dates, while the programme changes with each season.

For a different kind of stay, Aquagliss has a 500-square-metre wellness area spread over two floors. This means there are different options to consider when planning a stay in Freyming-Merlebach: an event at Le Gouvy, wellness at Aquagliss, or a trip focused more on history and landscape. Which one is right for you depends on how you want to spend your time in the town.
