If you’re looking for a hotel in Hayange, the town’s history can help you choose the focus of your stay. Hayange brings together archaeological traces, religious architecture, public art and a viewpoint overlooking the Fensch Valley. These different themes can help guide you if you’re interested in historic sites, a waymarked trail, or the connection between art and landscape.

Archaeology and routes through the town

The Éperon Barré du Bois des Chênes is an Iron Age fortified site dating from 700 to 50 BC. Its defences made use of the natural terrain; the rampart and ditch are still clearly visible in the landscape. The shape of the terrain helps explain part of the fortification: not only the rampart and ditch, but also the natural terrain formed part of its defensive strategy.

The waymarked trail Un chemin, une école offers a different perspective on Hayange. It is 11.3 kilometres long and connects different neighbourhoods. Along the way, you can discover hiking, local history, the economy, local legends, and the area’s animal and plant life. The themes offer contrasting perspectives: the Iron Age fortification and its landscape setting on the one hand, and a wide-ranging trail through the neighbourhoods on the other.

Religious architecture and art in the valley

The Église Saint-Martin is built from limestone from Neufchef and has a Renaissance-inspired design. Inside the church, you can admire frescoes created by Nicolas-Émilie Lefebvre from 1893 to 1895. The Opus 100 organ also contributes to its cultural heritage: the Dalstein-Haerpfer workshops completed it in 1894. It is one of the most notable organs and the largest in Moselle. The Église Saint-Martin is open to visitors free of charge every day; check visitor information before your trip.

In the centre of Hayange stands the Chapelle de Wendel, a Neo-Gothic funerary chapel. The tombs of the de Wendel family were once located there. The chapel has been listed in the inventory of Monuments historiques since 25 September 1980. It opens for the Journées du Patrimoine; check the current programme before your visit. This makes it different from the Église Saint-Martin, which is open daily.

Notre-Dame de Hayange offers panoramic views of Hayange and the Fensch Valley. The statue has stood about 307 metres above the town since 1903, watching over the valley. There is an orientation table at the foot of the statue. If you’re interested in public art, you can also find trompe-l’œil murals by Greg GAWRA in Hayange, among other places. Their subjects depict everyday life in the valley, as well as its industrial and rural heritage.

Events in Hayange

Hayange’s year-round programme of events and activities includes the traditional Fête du mouton. If this festival is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates before your trip.
