Hombourg-Haut: Medieval Quarter and Gothic Heritage
Accommodation in Hombourg-Haut
Hombourg-Haut brings together a medieval quarter, Gothic religious buildings, the musical history of Théodore Gouvy, and the Forêt de la Papiermühle. If you are looking for a hotel in Hombourg-Haut, these themes can help you choose the focus of your trip, whether architectural history, music, or nature.
Vieux-Hombourg and its architectural heritage
In the medieval quarter of Vieux-Hombourg, houses stand close together within the former fortifications. You can explore the quarter on a 2.5-kilometer circular walking route that begins at Place Jacques de Lorraine. Its set length and named starting point make the route a clearly defined way to get to know the area on foot. La Vieille Porte is the main entrance to the old town and the only one of its three fortified gates still standing.
The Gothic Chapelle Sainte-Catherine was built by the knight Simon de Hombourg between 1250 and 1270; it is classified as a Monument historique. Outside guided tours, the chapel can only be viewed from the outside. It is open during guided tours led by the tourist office. If you would like to see the interior, check the tour dates in advance.
Gothic architecture and protected ensembles
The Collégiale Saint-Étienne was built for a chapter of canons founded in Hombourg-Haut in 1254. Its connection to the chapter of canons identifies the church as a building for a religious community. Construction of the Gothic church began in the late 13th century and was completed around 1400. Compared with the Chapelle Sainte-Catherine, which was built between 1250 and 1270, construction of the Collégiale began later. Unlike the closely packed houses of Vieux-Hombourg, it stands on a rocky promontory and is visible from almost every side.
The former Château fort complex stood between the Collégiale Saint-Étienne and the Chapelle Sainte-Catherine. The protected Château d’Hausen ensemble includes the façades and roofs of the château and its outbuildings, including the orangery, the entire garden, the gardener’s house façades and roof, and the estate’s perimeter wall. It was protected by decree dated June 5, 2019.
Théodore Gouvy and music
The composer Théodore Gouvy lived at the Villa Gouvy for the last 30 years of his life and composed his most important works there. Visits to the villa must be arranged in advance; it is not usually open to the public. The Festival international Théodore Gouvy presents a series of concerts every year celebrating the compositions of the local composer. Check specific concert dates before your trip.
Walks and hikes
The Forêt de la Papiermühle offers a different focus from the dense historic development: it is one of the largest forests in Moselle and the second-largest forest in the entire coal basin. Walkers and hikers use the forest area; hiking and cycling routes are available from the tourist information office. In Hombourg-Haut, you can therefore choose between two different ways of getting around: a set 2.5-kilometer circular walk through the medieval quarter and routes through the extensive forest.
