Set on a plateau more than 400 metres above sea level, Hommert brings together distinctive landscape features and a clearly defined local history. The state forest frames the steepest slopes; from the summit of the Tivoli, views stretch across the Lorraine plateau to the Donon massif. The church, its organ, the Rocher siamois and the Balade Gourmande add further specific points of interest. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your stay: views, natural features, local history and a walk focused on food.

Landscape and Landmarks

Hommert’s elevation is a defining feature: the village lies on a plateau more than 400 metres above sea level. The state forest frames the steepest slopes. At the summit of the Tivoli, the focus shifts to the view, which extends across the Lorraine plateau to the Donon massif. These offer two distinct ways to appreciate the landscape: the village’s elevated setting and the panorama from a named summit. If long-distance views matter to you when choosing your stay, the Tivoli is a specific point of interest.

The Rocher siamois offers a different attraction. It consists of two rocks that look as though they have been glued together, and stands out for its unusual shape. This sets it apart from the far-reaching view at the Tivoli: here, a single rock formation is the focus, while there, the view takes in a much wider landscape. These two features offer different ways to decide whether you’d rather associate Hommert with a panorama or a striking natural formation.

Church and Organ History

The present-day church is dedicated to Saint Wendelin and was blessed by J. Brisse on 16 December 1781. Its organ extends the local history into a later period. The instrument was probably built around 1832 by organ builder Verschneider. At the initiative of Abbé Demesse, Bernard Aubertin completely restored the organ; it was inaugurated on 14 November 1982.

The organ’s timeline therefore includes two distinct dates: its probable construction date and its later restoration and inauguration. Together with the church’s history, these provide an overview spanning the 18th to the 20th century. If you’re interested in local religious history, the church offers a specific point of reference; the organ adds the story of an instrument whose original date is explicitly given as probable.

Walking and Food

The Balade Gourmande began in 2002 as a charity walk to raise money for the church’s heating costs. It follows a route of about 8 km, with tasting stops and activities along the way. The approximate distance is a useful guide for planning your walk; the food stops and activities also give the event its distinctive character. Individual editions and programmes may vary. If you’d like to include the Balade Gourmande in your stay, check the details of the relevant edition before making specific plans.

Another walking option is the Sentier panoramique des Arbres et des Pierres. It starts just a few steps from the municipal Gîte de Hommert. The two options have different focuses: the panoramic trail is a named route near the gîte, while the Balade Gourmande follows a route of about 8 km with tastings and activities. Trail conditions may change, so check the current situation before setting out.

Accommodation and Trip Planning

The municipal Gîte de Hommert welcomes hikers and has one room for a person with reduced mobility. You should also check availability for your preferred dates. This lets you consider the gîte as an accommodation option without assuming that the stated room provision applies to other places to stay.

When choosing between the landscape and cultural highlights, it’s worth considering each one separately: the Tivoli offers views, the Rocher siamois is an unusual rock formation, and the church is notable for its history and organ. The Balade Gourmande adds a walking event with tasting stops. Together, these specific points of interest help you plan your stay in Hommert, but be sure to check event and accommodation details again before travelling.
