Three highlights provide a structure for planning your trip to Manderen: the building history of Château de Malbrouck, the architecture of Église Saint-Étienne and natural sites with distinct features. This allows you to choose between a cultural itinerary, sacred architecture and a challenging hike.

Château de Malbrouck: Building History and Cultural Programme

Château de Malbrouck was built at the beginning of the 15th century by the knight Arnold VI de Sierck, who named it Château de Meinsberg. In Lorraine, it is the only fully preserved 15th-century castle. Its construction date, historic name and surviving fabric offer a concise introduction to the history of the building. Château de Malbrouck has been open to the public since 1998 and has offered a varied cultural programme ever since. As specific events may vary, check the latest event dates before your visit. This lets you combine the history of the castle with an event taking place during your travel dates.

Église Saint-Étienne: Construction Phases and Features

Église Saint-Étienne stands above Manderen and replaced a church dating from 1618. The nave and choir are believed to have been built around 1776; the bell tower is dated 1894. The church thus brings together construction phases from different periods: the date for the nave and choir is approximate, while the bell tower is attributed to a specific year. Its carved furnishings are particularly elaborate. These include a stone high altar retable from the transitional period between the late Renaissance and early Baroque, as well as several statues. The construction phases and furnishings offer two distinct art-historical perspectives on the church.

Circuit de Malbrouck: A Longer Hike

Circuit de Malbrouck is an outdoor walking route that starts in Manderen-Ritzing and combines historical and natural themes. This challenging circular hike is 14 kilometres long, with a stated duration of five hours. These details help you consider the route as a longer activity in its own right and take its stated difficulty into account when choosing. The route is signposted. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. The Chapelle de la Paix is also highlighted along the Circuit de Malbrouck as a place of understanding between peoples. It is a specific cultural landmark on the hike.

Ravin du Diable and Résurgence du Husprung

Ravin du Diable is in the forest of Manderen and consists of a hollow with a pond. It can only be visited outdoors and independently, via marked paths. The ravine is also associated with a legend that Arnold VI de Sierck sold his soul to the devil to finish building his castle. This adds a story associated with the site to its architectural history.

Résurgence du Husprung offers a different natural highlight. It is a Vaucluse-type karst spring and a resurgence of infiltrated water. You can observe water emerging from the ground there. The two natural sites differ in their specific features: the hollow and pond define the landscape at Ravin du Diable, while the visible emergence of water is the defining feature at Husprung.
