Sierck-les-Bains: Castle, Churches and Marienfloss
Accommodation in Sierck-les-Bains
Sierck-les-Bains combines historic buildings with a range of ways to experience the landscape on foot or along the Moselle. Several highlights can shape your travel plans: the Château des Ducs de Lorraine, the Marienfloss sanctuary south of town, the parish church of the Nativity of Mary, and the Circuit des Quartzites and Voie Bleue routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Sierck-les-Bains, you can decide whether historic sites, a challenging hike or the Moselle landscape should be the focus of your stay.
Castle, Town Gate and Church
The Château des Ducs de Lorraine is a protected historic monument. Access to the viewing terrace, ramparts and towers is exclusively via stairs. Bear this access limitation in mind when including these areas in your visit plans. From April 1 to November 11, 2026, the château offers self-guided and guided tours, a treasure hunt, an escape game and events. The seasonal program may change, so check the dates before your visit.
The Tour de l’Horloge is a town gate dating from the 13th or 14th century and formed part of Sierck-les-Bains’ first fortified town wall. In the 20th century, the gate was converted into a museum. The parish church of the Nativity of Mary originated as a chapel intended for the Knights of the Teutonic Order. Its massive, fortress-like exterior contrasts with an elegant Gothic-style interior. The town gate and church therefore offer two different insights into the town’s architectural history.
Marienfloss and Its History
The Marienfloss sanctuary lies south of Sierck-les-Bains. It was founded in 1238 by Duke Matthieu II of Lorraine and Catherine de Limbourg. Of the former church, the chapel on the Gospel side has survived; the church itself had three naves. Even after the further destruction and ruins caused by the Thirty Years’ War, pilgrimages to Marienfloss continued. Its foundation, surviving architectural feature and recorded pilgrimage history make it a distinct highlight, different from the buildings in the town center.
Hiking and the Moselle Landscape
The Circuit des Quartzites is a challenging 12.5-kilometer circular hiking trail starting from Sierck-les-Bains. Its route is provisional and temporarily altered due to forestry work; check trail conditions before setting out. The trail passes through the wooded valley of the Montenach stream and over the heights of Sierck-les-Bains. Along the way, it offers panoramic views of the Lorraine Plateau, Stromberg and the Moselle Valley. Its length, difficulty rating and scenery give you specific points to consider when planning this hike.
The Voie Bleue offers a different focus: it leaves Sierck-les-Bains along the winding course of the Moselle. While the Circuit des Quartzites is described as a challenging circular route, the Voie Bleue follows the river out of town. This gives you two different route options without having to combine one with the other. You should also check route conditions before setting off on the Voie Bleue.
