Silly-Sur-Nied brings together rural heritage, waterways and a theatre event held every year in May as reasons to visit. There is also a hiking trail and several opportunities for physical activity. As you start planning your trip, a simple priority can help: should your stay focus mainly on local history, the festival dates, or the landscape and outdoor activities?

Waterways and landscape

The Les Chiennes stream runs through Silly-Sur-Nied and is 2.2 kilometres long. The Nied forms the eastern boundary of the municipality and part of its northern boundary. This means there are two distinct geographical features: a stream running through the village and a river bordering parts of the municipality.

The natural heritage includes traditional orchards on the slopes, gardens, hedgerows, notable trees, wet meadows, streams and riverside vegetation. The features range from gardens and orchards to wet areas and vegetated riverbanks. Together, they give a clear picture of the different landscape elements that make up the municipality’s natural heritage.

On the village’s immediate outskirts are rural wetlands with riverside vegetation, hedgerows and meadows. Paths are intended to connect these areas with the built-up and rural parts of the municipality. This connection is a planning objective, while the hiking trail follows a specific route of its own.

Le Verger de Silly-Sur-Nied is a municipal orchard project featuring fruit trees, plants and berry fruits. It adds a focus on cultivated plants and fruit to the landscape themes. If you plan to visit the orchard, check access arrangements in advance.

Heritage and local history

The built heritage includes some old barns and farmhouses, as well as manor houses dating from the early 20th century. The range described spans rural farm and agricultural buildings to manor houses with a specific historical date.

The Croix du Russe is located on the route des Etangs. Pierre Vagner had it erected in gratitude after surviving the Crimean War. In 1896, Abbé Maire, the priest of Silly, blessed the cross. The personal reason for its construction and the year it was blessed give this monument a historical significance.

Silly-Sur-Nied also has three calvaries; they may once have lined the processions for the blessing of the fields.

Festival, hiking trail and outdoor activities

The “Silly-sur-scène” festival takes place every year in May and welcomes theatre groups from other regions. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific dates and programme for that year, as both may change.

The hiking trail starts at the mairie car park, climbs to the sports ground and reaches the forest via country paths. The circular route description was updated on 23 December 2024. Check the current route before setting out.

Since 2019, Silly-Sur-Nied has had a boules area with two pétanque courts. An outdoor street-workout facility was installed on 7 June 2025 and is intended for all age groups. There are thus several ways to stay active: a route to the forest, pétanque on two courts, and outdoor workouts. The facilities’ availability may change; check before planning a visit.

Getting there and planning your trip
