When planning a trip to Aumontzey, it is important to note the location of each destination: the Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Rosaire Chapel is in the territory of the former commune of Aumontzey; other cultural and natural attractions are in Granges-Aumontzey. This makes it easy to distinguish between local history and outdoor activities. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether architectural history or activity options will play a greater role in your stay.

The Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Rosaire Chapel

Construction of the chapel began on May 19, 1913; it was consecrated on April 19, 1914. Architecturally, it is designed in the style of an Oriental temple. It was intended to offer factory workers a more accessible place of worship than the church in Jussarupt.

Beneath the chapel was a hall with a stage, intended for theatrical performances by young people from the surrounding area. A concrete water tower was built inside the false bell tower, supplying drinking water to the adjacent workers’ housing. The building thus combined a religious purpose, a space intended for cultural events, and a practical water supply.

Memorials and transport history

The church in Granges-Aumontzey contains a memorial to the First World War, which is protected as a historic monument. It is on the right as you enter the building.

The railway line from Aumontzey is part of the area’s transport history: it was extended to Gérardmer on June 28, 1878, and closed on March 21, 1988. The line is no longer in service and therefore is not a current rail connection for arriving in the area.
