Cultural history, two hikes, and the traditional August fair give a trip to Dommartin-Lès-Remiremont several different focal points. You can plan around church art and regional history, the viewpoints and trail details, or the dates of an event.

Cultural History and Church Art

The Maison du Patrimoine has a room dedicated to local history, with archaeological remains and records of the region’s past. Another room focuses on religious art and local spiritual practices; a third is reserved for temporary exhibitions. This brings different aspects of local and regional heritage together.

The Église Saint-Laurent contains a high altar, a retable, and a tabernacle in the Louis XV style. The ensemble dates from the 18th century. The large organ represents a different period: the Géhin brothers built it in 1874. Its case, made of Vosges fir, is designed in the Neo-Gothic style; the organ is considered the best-preserved instrument from the brothers’ entire output. The altar ensemble and organ thus offer two distinct historical points of reference within the same church.

The Croix de Tirpoix and Its Story

The shaft of the Croix de Tirpoix bears two scallop shells on either side of a pilgrim’s staff. According to local tradition, Jehan Grossir had the cross erected in 1752 in memory of his brother Jacques. Jacques is said to have died near his brother’s house while returning from a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

To reach the Croix de Tirpoix, head towards the riding farm near the Granges de Franould. At the turning for the farm, continue uphill to the right. The cross stands on the left a few metres beyond the forest entrance.

Hikes with Different Viewpoints

The La Vierge du Mai hike is 5.7 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 223 metres, and takes about one hour and 45 minutes. It starts in the car park in front of the town hall and leads to a viewpoint over the valley. La Brasserie is listed as 5.9 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 220 metres; it takes about two hours. The trail is marked with red rings and includes a return route to a viewpoint at the Roche.

The destinations also distinguish the two hikes: La Vierge du Mai leads to a view over the valley, while La Brasserie goes to the viewpoint at the Roche. La Brasserie is 0.2 kilometres longer, while La Vierge du Mai has three metres more elevation gain. The estimated duration for La Brasserie is about 15 minutes longer. Route details may be updated; check them before setting out on your hike.

The La Brasserie loop also passes the ruins of the former Villemard farm. This lets you combine the viewpoint with another historical point of interest along the trail. The two hikes have similar route statistics but lead to different viewpoints and offer different experiences along the way.

Voie Verte and Other Outdoor Routes

Near Dommartin-lès-Remiremont, the Voie Verte des Hautes Vosges splits into two paved routes for a range of activities. Both follow the course of former railway lines. A section of about three kilometres runs between Remiremont and Dommartin-lès-Remiremont, ending at a junction between two valleys.

You can use the Voie Verte to reach the starting points for the La Brasserie and La Vierge du Mai hikes. Mountain biking trails are also among the outdoor activities in Dommartin-lès-Remiremont. The former railway line and the hiking trails therefore offer different ways to get outdoors; the mountain biking trails mentioned are a separate leisure option.

A Traditional August Event

The traditional Foire aux pieds de cochons takes place in Dommartin-lès-Remiremont every August, where it has been held since 1983. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, compare your travel dates with the August dates announced for that year.

When looking for a hotel in Dommartin-Lès-Remiremont, you can start by deciding on your travel dates and the purpose of your trip: August is the relevant period for the fair, while the places and trails mentioned provide other starting points for planning a culture- or hiking-focused stay. The route details help you compare the two hikes by length, elevation gain, and approximate duration.
