Neufchâteau: Renaissance, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in Neufchâteau
Neufchâteau offers a range of options for a stay: Renaissance and church architecture, walking and cycling trails, and a playful way for children to explore the town.
Historic Centre and Renaissance
Place Jeanne d’Arc is the historic centre of Neufchâteau. Historic town houses line the square, including palaces belonging to the merchant bourgeoisie and the nobility. Neufchâteau was also the first place in the Vosges département to be designated a “Site Patrimonial Remarquable.” The square and this designation provide a tangible context for exploring the town’s history.
The Hôtel de Houdreville is a Renaissance town house that now houses the town hall. Its Renaissance staircase was restored in 2014—a dated detail in the palace’s architectural history. Visitors can also explore the medieval cellars. Contact the local tourist office to arrange access before your visit.
Le Scala is part of the former Couvent des Dames Augustines complex. Together with the Hôtel de Houdreville, it offers another perspective on the town’s history: one is connected to a former convent complex, while the other is a Renaissance palace used as the town hall.
Churches and Distinctive Architectural Details
The Église Saint-Christophe was first mentioned in 1094. The Église Saint-Nicolas stands out for combining two churches in one. The Chapelle Wiriot has another distinctive architectural feature: its vault dates from 1505 and has no vault cells. It is said to be the only one among 300 chapels in France with this feature.
Free visits to the Église Saint-Nicolas are offered in summer. As this is a seasonal offering, check the dates before travelling. Visitors interested in architectural history can explore a range of features: the early mention of Saint-Christophe, the distinctive construction of the Chapelle Wiriot, and the two churches in one at Saint-Nicolas.
Routes and Nature
The EuroVélo-19 route, “La Meuse à vélo,” passes through Neufchâteau. Part of the Circuit de la Frézelle follows the Frézelle stream. The family trail “Un détour dans la Plaine” starts in the Rouceux district and follows quiet paths along the Meuse. Each description focuses on something different: a cycling route through the town, a stretch of path by the stream, and a circular trail along the river.
The Circuit de Neufeys is listed as a 13 km hiking trail in Neufchâteau. Check trail conditions before setting out. The Neufeys forest is mostly beech woodland and is home to a giant sequoia. The forest and hiking trail offer two separate options to consider when planning your trip.
A Playful Discovery for Children
The “Livret jeu découverte” is for children aged four to six and helps them discover the historic centre. Connect-the-dots pictures, search-and-find puzzles and mazes lead to Neufchâteau’s main architectural landmarks. The booklet is sold at the tourist office reception as a set with a bag and small extras. Check availability and the current activities before your trip.
Whether you’re planning your stay around local history, a particular route or a playful exploration with children, these themes offer different ways to include Neufchâteau in your travel plans.
