Alzen offers several distinct points of interest to help you plan your trip: historic buildings, two hiking loops, the Sentier pieds-nus de l’Arize and the Écomusée d’Alzen. The Chapelle Sainte-Croix and the Lavoir des Paulis represent different periods in the village’s history; for the trails, specific details on duration, distance and elevation gain help you plan your time.

Cultural history at the Chapelle Sainte-Croix and Lavoir des Paulis

The Chapelle Sainte-Croix has Romanesque origins. Protestants set fire to the chapel around 1624; it was rebuilt in the 18th century and restored in the 19th century. Its construction history therefore spans several clearly distinct periods. A decree dated 11 December 1995 placed the façades and roofs under partial protection as Monuments historiques. This protection applies to these building elements, not to the entire building as a whole.

The Lavoir des Paulis represents a different timeline: it was built in the 19th century and remained in use until the 1960s. It was rebuilt in 2000. The municipality fully restored the lavoir. It is one of the sights along the discovery trail through Alzen. Together, these two historic stops reflect distinct building and usage histories.

Hiking in Alzen: two different time frames

Les mystères d’Alzen is a circular walk that starts at the village school and leads through the meadows, hamlets and forests of the Séronais. The trail is rated easy, is 6.3 kilometres long and has a stated walking time of 2 hours and 30 minutes; detours are not included. Allow extra time for these if needed. The guide dates from 2019; trail conditions and waymarking may change. Check the conditions and trail markers locally.

Another option is the La Chapelle Sainte Croix par les estives d’Alzen hiking loop. It starts at the car park at the Mairie d’Alzen and reaches its highest point at the Estive des Fautils, at an altitude of 940 metres. The stated elevation gain is 300 metres, and the walking time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The route guide dates from 2021; check seasonal conditions locally. The stated walking times differ by 15 minutes. For the first loop, the distance and difficulty rating are given; for the second, elevation gain and the highest point are also provided. These different details offer various ways to plan your trip.

Nature trail and Écomusée d’Alzen

The Sentier pieds-nus de l’Arize is a fun, 400-metre barefoot trail through the forest along the Arize. It includes rest areas and creative activities, including clay pottery and land art. A shaded footpath along the river leads to the trail in 15 minutes. For planning your time, keep two details separate: the duration of this footpath and the length of the barefoot trail itself.

The Écomusée d’Alzen has a different focus. The farm specialises in local animal breeds, including Casta cattle, Castillonnaise or Tarasconnaise sheep, and Gascon pigs. The farm’s table offers farm produce as well as local and/or organic products; bread-making and cheese-making workshops are also available. Animal farming, food and artisanal production are three distinct topics here for travellers interested in local agriculture.

For your trip, you can choose from several different areas of interest: historic buildings and their history, hikes with specific time and elevation details, or activities centred on the nature trail and agriculture.
