When planning a stay in Auzat, you can explore cultural history and mountain landscapes as distinct themes. Le Barri – Maison des Patrimoines, the Orris du Carla and Château de Montréal-de-Sos offer points of connection with the region’s history. Hiking, climbing and the Via ferrata provide a different focus. These themes can help you decide what to prioritize on your trip.

Cultural history in Auzat

Le Barri – Maison des Patrimoines is an interpretation centre exploring how people have shaped the mountain environment. Its exhibitions cover hydroelectric power, mining and archaeological excavations, as well as the fauna and flora of the Vicdessos Valley. The programme includes themed guided tours and educational workshops, including sessions on archaeology and the region’s wildlife and plant life. By bringing together technology and nature, the centre offers a starting point for visitors with a range of interests.

The Orris du Carla are a remarkably well-preserved group of dry-stone shepherds’ huts. Here, the focus is on the design of these former shelters. The orris are a few dozen metres from the Carla car park, beyond the Soulcem dam. Château de Montréal-de-Sos is in the hamlet of Olbier. From the 12th to the 15th century, it served as a barracks for the Counts of Foix. There is an information board at the château, with views over the upper Vicdessos Valley.

Hiking destinations and landscapes

The Natura 2000 site “mont Ceint, mont Béas, tourbière de Bernadouze” covers part of Auzat; it was designated on 4 May 2007. The Soulcem valley is another point of interest for enjoying nature. Numerous hikes from there lead to border peaks and high-altitude mountain lakes. The valley is considered an exceptional natural site, and the dam offers panoramic views.

The Circuit des Orris passes former shepherds’ shelters and takes in specific destinations along the way: it reaches Étang de Roumazet at 2,163 m and Étang de la Soucarrane at 2,292 m. It also leads to a footbridge at the foot of the Labinas waterfalls. This gives you a choice between a named trail with specific lakes and elevations, and the many hikes from the Soulcem valley to peaks and mountain lakes—two distinct ways to experience the landscape.

Climbing and adventure sports

The Via ferrata du Vicdessos offers an adventure sport activity amid the scenery of the Regional Natural Park and is suitable for a wide audience. Climbing is another option: the climbing areas at Le Far and Montcalm in Auzat have 135 routes and 143 pitches. Since the number of routes may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning a specific climbing trip.

Practical information for visiting the château

Château de Montréal-de-Sos is open year-round, free of charge. The walk to the château takes about 15 minutes along a stony path. As exceptional closures are possible, check locally whether it is accessible before your visit. This lets you include a visit to the historic site in your plans while keeping the approximate walking time and the nature of the path in mind.
