For planning a hotel stay in Montbel, Lac de Montbel and the historic buildings offer different points of interest. At the lake, the focus is on landscapes, birdwatching, and water activities. The churches and war memorial reveal another side of the area: its history and art.

Lac de Montbel: Landscapes and Activities

Created in 1985, Lac de Montbel is an artificial reservoir covering 570 hectares. Forests, valleys, and wild beaches line its shores. The Association des Naturalistes de l’Ariège has set up an observation station by the lake to observe the area’s many birds. If you plan to visit the station, check its current status locally.

As of its update on July 10, 2026, the activities offered by Les Rives de Montbel include stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, pedal boating, sailing, and boat rentals. Before visiting, check what is currently available. Les Rives de Montbel also has a supervised beach in July and August. Lifeguard supervision is therefore a seasonal factor to consider when planning.

A 16-kilometre loop runs around Lac de Montbel and can be completed on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. Another route runs from Camon to Montbel and is open to all non-motorised forms of transport. These are two distinct route options: the loop is specifically around the lake, while the other route connects Camon and Montbel. No walking or travel time is given for either route.

The lake thus offers concrete points of interest for different pursuits: the lakeside scenery, birdwatching, and several water sports. For route planning, you can choose between the 16-kilometre loop and the route from Camon to Montbel, which is open to non-motorised transport. Lifeguard supervision at the beach, meanwhile, is limited to July and August.

Churches, Art, and History

Saint-Vincent de Montbel has been mentioned as “ecclesia de Montebello” since 1318. The church’s present-day appearance dates back to its reconstruction in 1846 and renovations in the 20th century. Its features include nine contemporary stained-glass windows with geometric decoration. The early mention, reconstruction, and later renovations mark different stages in its history.

Montbel’s war memorial also brings together art and local history. Ariel Moscovici created the unique granite sculpture in 2002 under the title “Entre deux montagnes.” Its year, artist, material, and title give the memorial a distinct point of interest alongside the religious buildings.

The features of the Chapel of Saint-Sernin du Villaret point to the Romanesque period of the 11th to 12th centuries. The chapel houses a painting of the Adoration of the Shepherds. From the 15th century until 1970, it was an outlying chapel of Saint-André du Peyrat; it was completely renovated in the 1990s. Its cautious dating and documented history of use complement each other without establishing an exact construction year.

Taken together, the history of these buildings spans the early mention of Saint-Vincent de Montbel, the chapel’s renovations, and the memorial created in 2002. If you are particularly interested in religious art, the geometric stained-glass windows and the painting at Saint-Sernin du Villaret offer two different artistic themes.
