In Roquefixade, walking loops, viewpoints and history take centre stage. The network of trails ranges from marked circular routes to the long-distance GR 367 Sentier Cathare. There are also castle ruins, a protected altarpiece in the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and a festival of early music. If you are considering the village for your trip, these varied themes can help you plan: you can focus your time on hiking, local history or a cultural event.

Walking Loops and Long-Distance Trails

Twelve marked walking loops start and finish at the Gîte d’étape de Roquefixade. The routes can be walked in either direction, split into sections or combined. When planning, it is worth checking the details for each route: one loop, for example, lists its distance, walking time and elevation gain, while the Sentier des Crêtes has a different profile, with viewpoints and a connection to the Sentier Cathare. Signposting and trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The Le Château walking loop is 3 kilometres long, takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 220 metres. These three figures describe different aspects of the route: distance, approximate time and elevation gain. A marked trail also leads from the centre of Roquefixade to the castle ruins in about 30 minutes on foot; the ascent has no major difficulties. Trail conditions here can also change.

The Sentier des Crêtes starts at the gîte, follows part of the Sentier Cathare and returns to the gîte. At Roc de la Lauzade, a viewpoint offers a 360-degree panorama. The trail also affords views of Montségur and the Tabe Massif; visibility depends on the weather. If you want to compare individual loops with a longer route, the GR 367 Sentier Cathare is on a different scale: the long-distance trail runs for 241 kilometres from Port-la-Nouvelle to Foix and is designed to take 13 days. It originated in a project to link eight castles in the Pays Cathare, including Roquefixade, on foot. Check the latest route information before setting out on a longer hike.

Other route descriptions take you through the surrounding area: the La Gleiso Catoulico loop (No. 5) starts at the gîte, follows the Sentier Cathare to the Grotte de la Gleiso Catoulico and returns via the Sentier Cathare. The Tour du Pays d’Olmes nord hike leads to Bac d’en Bas and Bac du Haut, then to the Crêtes de Roquefixade, before descending towards the Château and continuing to Leychert. It also passes the Orris of Château de Roquefixade, which should be distinguished from the approximately 30 Orris on Pech de Roquefixade.

Castle Ruins and History

Roquefixade Castle was first mentioned in 1034; its remains have been listed as a Monument historique since 1995. The marked trail from the village centre to the ruins gives visitors a practical way to reach this historic site on foot. The walk takes about 30 minutes, and the ascent has no major difficulties. When planning, bear in mind that trail conditions can change.

The Orris are also part of the village’s cultural heritage: there are about 30 dry-stone huts on Pech de Roquefixade, known as Orris. A hiking guide to the Roquefixade loops covers local flora, geology, landscapes and history. It costs €3 and is available at the Gîte d’étape de Roquefixade and at the tourist offices in Lavelanet, Foix and Mirepoix. Sales outlets can change, so check in advance if needed.

Church, Music and Other Activities

The high altar in the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste features a gilded, carved altarpiece. It dates from 1728, is attributed to Charles Clarac and has been protected as a historic monument since December 1986. The annual Musica del temps passat festival comprises four evenings of concerts in the church and on the village square. The programme features early music from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the Baroque period. Dates and venues may change; check the details for your travel dates.

The Association Patrimoine de Roquefixade organises guided discovery walks focusing on local flora. Dates may change, so check the current programme if you are interested. For an outing with a different focus, Escap’Ânes offers a day trip around Roquefixade accompanied by one or more donkeys. Availability and arrangements may change; confirm them with the provider in advance. Alongside the marked hiking trails, local flora and early music therefore offer other ways to shape your stay.
