Accommodation in Castanet
Castanet combines a distinctive historic village setting with two routes that offer different connections to the landscape and localities. This means your trip planning can focus on architecture and history as well as a protected valley and several named places. If you are looking for a hotel in Castanet for a culture- or hiking-focused stay, these specific themes can shape your trip.
Ségala architecture
Castanet is considered a fortified village dating from the 15th century. Its houses are typical of Ségala architecture. The village landscape features large building complexes as well as simple houses with lauze stone roofs; some have a square tower. Different types of buildings therefore stand side by side, rather than a single type of house defining the village landscape. The lauze roofs and square towers are further specific features that reflect Castanet’s architectural character.
Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and history
The bell tower of the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a landmark in the municipal landscape of Castanet. The church is documented as a priory from the 9th century. Its interior was restored several times in the 19th century; the work included the furnishings, flooring and Stations of the Cross. The church’s early history as a priory and the later work on its interior therefore belong to different periods in its history.
Another historical reference is the Chapel of Saint Joseph, located on the former main road from Sauveterre to Colombiès. Dominique Azemar, a priest from Sauveterre, founded it in 1660. The chapel adds another place, a named founder and a specific year to Castanet’s church history.
Hiking between the valley and localities
The “La vallée du Lieux” route offers panoramic views across the Ségala and leads into a valley that remains protected. The trail passes through woodland into the wild Lieux Valley and above the stream. Views, woodland and the stream are different aspects of the same route; at the same time, the valley’s protected status remains an important part of the landscape the trail passes through. The route is therefore a specific point of reference if you want to focus your trip planning on the landscape.
Parking is available at Place de la mairie in Castanet for the start of this route; there is also a motorhome parking area there. Check the current status of the parking areas before setting off.
The “Autour de Lardeyrolles” circular hike follows a different route. It starts at the church in Lardeyrolles and passes through the localities of Mas le Viel, Marsande, La Sicardie and La Sarette. Its route can therefore be traced through several named places. The starting point is a different church from Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Castanet.
The routes have different focuses: “La vallée du Lieux” highlights panoramic views, woodland and the valley, while “Autour de Lardeyrolles” links the circular route with the named localities. These differences give you a specific basis for tailoring the hiking part of your stay to the landscape or localities.
