Estaing: Hotels for heritage, hiking trails and wine
Accommodation in Estaing
Some of Estaing’s defining attractions include Château d’Estaing, Église Saint-Fleuret and hiking routes with specific distance information. Wine experiences are also available nearby. You can tailor your stay to architectural history, hiking or wine.
The château and Église Saint-Fleuret
Château d’Estaing is a listed historic monument; its construction began in the 11th century. Guided tours include the tower, two chapels, the family salon and the tower summit. Self-guided visits provide access to the upper courtyard, terrace, restored interiors and the exhibition “Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, un homme au service de la France et de l’Europe”. The two visit options differ in the areas included. If a particular part is important to you, you can plan around the option that covers it.
Église Saint-Fleuret was built at the end of the 15th century on the foundations of an earlier priory, which was already mentioned in 1087. It also houses a protected reliquary monstrance of Saint Fleuret. The reference to the priory and the much later construction of the church mark two distinct phases in the history of this site. The monstrance adds a specific religious connection to Saint Fleuret to the building’s history.

It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France” and is now open as a hiking trail. Compared with the 11 km Circuit, this section is nine kilometres longer. The two routes also differ in form: the Circuit is a circular route starting in Estaing, while the GR® 65 is a section of a pilgrimage route.
