The following places and activities give you specific points of reference for planning your trip.

History and Sacred Architecture

A document signed by Louis the Pious in Aachen on 8 April 819 mentions Grand-Vabre for the first time. It also reports that Dadon withdrew to a place called Grandvabre. The parish church of Grand-Vabre is dedicated to Saint Clair and Saint Roch; its oldest parts date from the 11th century. The Chapelle Saint-Léonard de Monédiès also dates from this century. Its ruins were overgrown with scrub, and restoration work took 15 years.

The restored pre-Romanesque chapel of Monédiès is notable for its layout: a rectangular nave and a rectangular choir are separated by a triumphal arch, and there are also narrow openings. The Grand-Vabre–Monédiès hike follows the Monédiès stream and reaches a restored pre-Romanesque chapel by the water. This lets you focus separately on architectural history and a route along the stream.

Near Grand-Vabre, the Chapelle Saint-Roch stands on the heights of Roucan and offers a view over the valley. Also nearby is the statue of Notre-Dame de la Paix, erected in 1945 on a panoramic rocky outcrop. It can be reached via a path behind the Chapelle Saint-Roch.

Routes and Activities by the Water

For cycling, the Voie de Conques (V86) begins in Grand-Vabre. From there, it runs through the Dourdou valley towards Bozouls and Espalion. Unlike the hike to Monédiès, this route focuses on cycling through the valley towards two other places. Check route conditions before setting off.

Fishing is permitted all year round in category 2 on the stretch of the Dourdou between Conques and Grand-Vabre. Fish species found there include trout, gudgeon, minnows, barbel and chub; trout are also stocked. The Les Pélies fishing course has the national “parcours famille” label. A car park right next to the jetty makes access easier for people with reduced mobility. ASVOLT offers stand-up paddleboard rentals on the water at Grand-Vabre. Check whether rentals are available before your trip.

Ceramics and Migration History

Poterie de la Confluence produces everyday and decorative objects as well as jewellery made from coloured faience and wood-fired Raku ceramics. The ceramics on display there are made in Grand-Vabre. The focus is on two different techniques and a wide range of items, from everyday objects to jewellery.

A description from January 2025 lists Espace Amériques as a place to visit for learning about the migration of Grand-Vabre residents to the USA, Argentina and Canada between 1884 and 1950. For groups, the same description mentions a screening of the 35-minute film “Grand-Vabre, terre d’émigration vers les Amériques”. It also lists visits by appointment throughout the year, as well as opening hours on Sunday mornings in July and August. Confirm appointment and opening hours before your visit.

Tastings and Travel Planning

Ruchers de la Rivière d’Olt offers tastings of its own beer and fruit juices on its terrace, as well as farmhouse sorbets in 20 flavours. The sorbets are made with honey, plants or fruit from the farm, and wild-foraged ingredients. Along with architectural history, routes and activities on the Dourdou, this gives you a culinary option for your stay.
