La Couvertoirade: Templar Heritage and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in La Couvertoirade
La Couvertoirade brings together a medieval town with a heritage shaped by the Templars and, later, the Hospitallers. Two distinct perspectives can guide your travel planning: the historic village, with its buildings and fortified walls, and hikes that reach or start in the village. The routes vary considerably in length, so you can plan your visit around the balance you want between the village’s history and time spent hiking.
Templars and Hospitallers in the Town
The town of La Couvertoirade has a historic heritage shaped by the Knights Templar and, later, the Hospitallers. The Château Templier de la Couvertoirade was built at the end of the 12th century and is a classified historic monument. It is considered the only castle built by the Templars in France. The church was built by the Hospitallers. The Templars, as builders of the château, and the Hospitallers, as builders of the church, therefore represent distinct connections to the town’s history.
The Maison de la Scipione is the starting point for your visit. Films and exhibitions introduce the village’s history, providing an overview before you explore the historic buildings individually. This approach complements the stories behind the specific buildings: it draws attention to the heritage as a whole, not just the château or the church.
Fortified Walls and Hiking Trails
A walk along the fortified walls offers panoramic views of the medieval village and its main monuments. This lets you experience the town from a different perspective than when looking at individual buildings. Check access to the fortified walls before your visit.
The GR71 reaches La Couvertoirade on its 17-kilometre route from Le Caylar via Le Cros. On the final section along the hillside, the trail offers a view of the Templar town, then runs along the fortified walls into the medieval village. The hike is rated easy, takes 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes, and has 170 metres of elevation gain. Distance, duration, elevation gain, and difficulty rating are useful guides for planning your time. Check the route details again before your trip.
The GR® 71C offers a different route length: this 83-kilometre circular route runs through the Parc Naturel Régional des Grands Causses and starts in La Couvertoirade. Compared with the 17-kilometre GR71 route that reaches the village, it is a considerably longer hiking option. This allows you to choose between a hike to the village and a long circular route when planning your trip.
Moulin du Rédounel and the Surrounding Landscape
The Moulin du Rédounel, built in the 17th century, stands on the heights above La Couvertoirade. From there, you can look out over the medieval town and the landscapes of the Causse du Larzac. The mill adds a connection to the surrounding landscape to the town’s historic buildings. During Les Enfarinades, its sails may turn again; the mill produces flour and gives visitors a demonstration of historic craft skills. If this event is important to your plans, check the current programme before your trip.
