La Selve lies between the Ségala and the Plateau du Lévézou; several streams mark the boundaries of the area. Churches, an exhibition, festival traditions and trails offer different focal points for a stay. The historic sites range from a church built on the site of a former castle chapel to an exhibition about religious and Templar heritage. Two very different hiking options and the seasonal conditions for some visits are also relevant when planning your trip.

Churches and Religious Heritage

Notre-Dame Church was built in 1835 on the site of the former castle chapel. St-Martial Church in the village of Lagarde, in La Selve, features Neo-Byzantine frescoes by Nicolaï Greschny. The two churches offer different points of interest: the former site of the castle chapel is part of Notre-Dame’s building history, while the frescoes give St-Martial its artistic significance. St-Martial offers free guided tours; outside the season, visits are possible by prior arrangement. Check the 2026 seasonal programme dates before your visit.

The Salle d’exposition du Patrimoine Religieux et Templier de La Selve presents the liturgical calendar and sacred vestments, along with their respective colours, in an educational way. Two panels explain La Selve’s history as a former Templar commandery. The exhibition thus combines accessible liturgical themes with the historical context of the area. In 2026, it is open free of charge during the church’s opening hours. Check the opening hours before your visit, as they determine when you can access the exhibition.

A local report dated 25 October 2020 mentions a bronze bust of M. Froment in La Selve cemetery. He was a musician who died in 1934. The bust adds a personal connection to local remembrance alongside the churches and exhibition.

Festivals and Hiking

The annual Fête du Muguet includes a 13 km hike around La Selve. The traditional Fête du Cabrit in Bégon features hiking and mountain biking routes, with culinary stops along the way. For choosing between the activities, there is a clear difference: the Muguet hike has a stated route length, while the Cabrit festival includes two types of routes and culinary stops.

The “Le ruisseau de Massebaque” circular hike in La Selve is 7.35 km long and rated easy. It starts and ends at the car park opposite the village hall, near the town hall. The distances offer a direct comparison: 7.35 km for the designated circular hike and 13 km for the hike around La Selve during the Muguet festival. Check route directions and access information before setting off, as access conditions may change.

Treasure Hunt Through La Selve

The “Chasse au trésor à La Selve” is a permanent activity available year-round. Its route leads from the old gateway to the church via “Lo Buisson” square and “La Batuda” street. The directions therefore specify both the starting point and destination, as well as two stops along the way.
