Discover Laguiole: whisky, cheese and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Laguiole
In Laguiole, you can explore tastings, local history and outdoor activities as different ways to spend your stay.
Whisky and cheese: production and ageing
Distillerie Twelve is located in a former presbytery in Laguiole and offers tours. During a visit, the production stages of Whisky d’Aubrac—brewing, distilling and ageing—are presented, followed by a tasting. The programme therefore includes both the production process and sampling. Check the visiting arrangements before you travel.
Jeune Montagne offers a different focus: the cheese dairy in Laguiole offers a free visit lasting about 30 minutes. At tastings, you can discover different ageing stages of Laguiole AOP, including six months, 12 to 24 months, and Laguiole Grand Aubrac, made from milk from summer pastures. Alongside the ageing details, you will encounter a named cheese variety with a specific milk origin. The difference between the two visits is clear: Twelve focuses on the stages of whisky production, while Jeune Montagne focuses on cheese and ageing.
Churches, a fresco and a collection
The Église Saint-Matthieu dates from the 16th century and stands on the site of a former castle. Its construction date and location provide two distinct historical reference points: the date relates to the church, while the former castle site is where it stands. A fresco by Nicolaï Greschny is located in the crypt of the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse.
The Musée du couteau Laguiole presents a collection of rare objects that bear witness to human ingenuity over the centuries.
Cycling route, family experience and landscapes
The short Vélo-et-Fromages route starts at Place du Foirail in Laguiole. It is listed as an easy cycling route covering 30.2 kilometres; its themes are agro-pastoralism and local know-how. The difficulty rating and route length help you assess it as a cycling option, while the two themes provide its subject matter.
The Baludik route “Max et les mémoires de Jeannou” offers another way to discover the town. It is a self-guided family experience about the town’s history and heritage and lasts about an hour. Its self-guided format differs from a visit focused on production or tasting: here, the focus is on local history.
For those who prefer a hike, Les Abiouradous offers a route through the Bois de Laguiole and across Aubrac pastures with dry-stone walls and burons. The forest and pastures define the character of this route, while the Vélo-et-Fromages route focuses on cycling and the themes mentioned above.
The Laguiole ski resort offers ski runs, snowshoe hikes and dog-sled excursions. These add several types of winter activities to the cycling, hiking and cultural experiences.
