For a stay in Lugan, you can focus on two distinct themes: historic buildings and the landscape with its paths and trails. The architectural heritage includes the Hospitaller Commandery, the church, and Château de la Garinie; hills, slopes, meadows, cultivated land, and forests shape the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Lugan, these themes can help you decide whether to focus on heritage, walks, or both.

The Hospitaller Commandery and the history of the village

The Hospitaller Commandery consists of a square fortified house with four round towers, three of which are fortified. The complex also includes a chapel and farm buildings. During your visit, you can learn about the Hospitallers, the Order of Malta, and everyday life in the Middle Ages.

Another historical reference to Lugan dates to 1180: D. Baldois, Baldois de Lugan, and R de Frotgairesc transferred to the Hospital of Jerusalem all the rights to the lands they owned in Lugan.

The church and Château de la Garinie

Lugan’s church was originally the chapel of the commandery. It has two 19th-century altarpieces, both listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. The 33-metre-high bell tower is octagonal and stands on a square base; it can be reached via a wooden spiral staircase.

Château de la Garinie offers a different architectural focus from the church: it was built in the 14th century, altered several times, and retains elements of medieval military architecture. The construction date and subsequent alterations provide different reference points for the château’s architectural history.

Landscape and hiking trail

Lugan’s landscape includes hills, slopes, meadows, cultivated land, and forests. Paths and trails run through it, where walkers can observe the local flora and fauna. Unlike the historic buildings, these routes bring the experience of the landscape to the fore.
