Rieupeyroux: Saint-Martial, Ségala trails and markets
Accommodation in Rieupeyroux
Rieupeyroux brings together the fortified church of Saint-Martial and a medieval townscape with trails through the Ségala countryside. Choose from a range of interests when planning your trip: architecture, an audio trail, hikes or seasonal markets.
Saint-Martial and the medieval townscape
The church of Saint-Martial is listed as a French historical monument (Monument historique). It contains remnants of the original Romanesque church, including several columns and capitals. In 1356, at the beginning of the Hundred Years’ War, the church was fortified and incorporated into the town walls. Its defensive features include a wall-walk and machicolations. The building thus brings together Romanesque elements and features from its later fortification.
The arcades of Place du Gitat are also part of Rieupeyroux’s surviving medieval townscape. Visitors interested in architecture and local history will find two distinct perspectives here: the construction history of a fortified church and the character of a medieval square. The arcades are a distinctive feature of the townscape, while Saint-Martial tells its own architectural story through its Romanesque remnants and defensive details.
The Ségala landscape and its chapels
Rieupeyroux is in the Ségala, a region shaped by granite and schist landscapes. Open plateaus are interspersed with valley floors. The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Modulance stands on the 804-metre-high mountain of Modulance and overlooks the Ségala region. These landscape features broaden the view beyond the town centre to the wider region.
The trails offer a range of experiences, too. The Sentier de l'aventure leads to the chapel in Rieupeyroux, passes through a patch of woodland and runs alongside an artificial lake. The Le Bélier circular trail combines woodland scenery and views of the Ségala with architectural heritage between the chapel and the medieval town centre. To reach the town centre for this circular trail, take the D911 or D905.
Audio trail and hikes
Oreilles en Balade is a free, easy audio trail that takes about an hour. There is an adult version and a children’s version; the trail has six listening stops in total, with audio points and QR codes that can be used independently. This makes it easy to distinguish the audio route’s duration from the De l’arbre bleu à l’arboretum hike, which is listed as an easy route taking around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
De l’arbre bleu à l’arboretum is 5.24 kilometres long, with 147 metres of elevation gain. The route crosses a small stream and passes through woodland and village landscapes along the lake; it also offers a view of the church. Comparing walking times and elevation gain gives you practical information for planning your day, without treating the different routes as if they were the same. Trail conditions can change seasonally, so check them before setting out. If you plan to use the audio trail’s QR codes, you can check digital access in advance if needed.
Seasonal markets and horse-riding activities
The Marchés de producteurs de pays are held in Rieupeyroux every Sunday morning from mid-June to mid-September. Products include aligot, cured meats, goat’s cheese, fouace, bread and gâteau à la broche. The products offered by individual vendors may vary. Dates and times may also change from year to year, so check them for your intended travel period.
The Centre équestre du Haut Ségala offers pony rides and horseback rides in the Ségala, as well as pony taster sessions for younger children. If you plan to take part, check booking and operating arrangements before your trip. This lets you consider the markets, a cultural visit and activities in the Ségala as different options for your trip.
