Hikes suited to different time budgets, the Fort of Saint-Jean-d'Alcas and botanical themes in Saint-Paul des Fonts offer different highlights for a trip to Saint-Jean-et-Saint-Paul. You can shape your plans around the landscapes, history or the work of Canon Hippolyte Coste. The two hikes described differ significantly in length, duration and route; the cultural attractions offer their own highlights.

Hiking: two routes, two time budgets

“Sur les pas de l'Abbé Coste” is an easy route covering 6.75 kilometres. It is listed as taking 2 hours and 30 minutes, starting and ending in Saint-Paul des Fonts. The trail climbs through woodland to a plateau. From there, depending on conditions, you can enjoy views of the natural Cirque de Saint-Paul-des-Fonts, the Annoux Valley and the Avant-Causses. The route therefore combines a manageable listed walking time with views of several named landscapes.

The “De St-Jean-d'Alcas à Sylvanès” hike is quite different: it is 17.65 kilometres long, rated moderate and listed as taking five hours. It starts at the Fort of Saint-Jean-d'Alcas and ends in Sylvanès. Along the way, the route crosses the agropastoral plateau of Mascourbe, descends into the Sorgues Valley and then climbs a wooded mountain towards Sylvanès. Compared with the shorter route, it calls for a longer time commitment and passes through a succession of different landscapes.

When choosing between the two hikes, distance is not the only factor: their stated difficulty levels and durations also differ. Check the trail conditions and practical details before setting out, especially for the longer hike.

The Fort of Saint-Jean-d'Alcas

The fort was built in the 15th century to protect the local population during the upheavals of the Hundred Years' War. On a self-guided visit, you can use an accompanying booklet or audio guide to explore the shelters in the north wall and enjoy the views from the ramparts. This lets you focus your visit on both the structure and the views.

Seasonal visiting arrangements may vary, so check the current conditions before your visit. The fort's historic defensive purpose and the stops described today on the tour offer two different perspectives: its role in the 15th century and the areas you can explore on a self-guided visit.

Botany and the heritage of Hippolyte Coste

The Cirque de Saint-Paul-des-Fonts is notable for its rich variety of flora. Nearly 1,000 species have been recorded in Canon Coste's herbariums, including some species endemic to the Causses. Botanical nature trails have been created around the village by the cirque. Visitors interested in nature can discover the landscape with its plant life in mind.

The Espace botanique Hippolyte Coste is located in Saint-Paul des Fonts. It presents the life and work of the canon; in 2022, the French Minister of Culture awarded it the “Maison d'Illustre” designation. The visitor route includes a botanical garden featuring the main plants of the flora of the Grands Causses, as well as a small museum.

The museum's objects and materials include herbarium excerpts, originals or facsimiles, and items such as a plant press. The garden and museum offer different highlights: outdoors, the plants of the Grands Causses take centre stage; indoors, the focus is on herbarium material and objects from botanical work. Together with the nature trails and the species recorded in Coste's herbariums, botany offers several ways to explore the subject—from the area's plant life to the life and work of the canon.
