In Sauveterre-De-Rouergue, historic sites, art in the townscape and markets offer different starting points for a stay. The bastide was founded in 1281; the markets follow weekly, seasonal and annual schedules. When planning a stay, you can time your trip according to whether history and art or a particular market day is your main focus.

The town’s founding and Saint-Christophe Church

Guillaume de Macon, Seneschal of Rouergue, founded Sauveterre-De-Rouergue in 1281 on behalf of King Philippe III the Bold. Saint-Christophe Church is the former collegiate church of the bastide. Construction began in the 14th century within the fortifications. The founding of the town and the construction of the church thus represent different historical stages: 1281 marks the town’s founding, while the church represents a later building phase.

Art in the townscape and L’Ancre

The “Sentier d’Art en Bastide” features eight works of art integrated into Sauveterre-De-Rouergue’s heritage, squares and lanes. Here, art and the townscape are not separate themes. The art trail offers a distinct point of interest for anyone interested in public art.

L’Ancre brings together a museum, a shared boutique run by creative professionals and a themed library. These three functions offer different ways to engage with culture and creative work. Exhibitions and the creative professionals featured may change; check what is currently on offer before visiting.

Markets throughout the seasons

The open-air market, held year-round, takes place on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon at Place aux Arcades. Around 15 local producers and craftspeople offer food, drinks and handcrafted goods. Of the events described, the Sunday market is the regular weekly one. If you travel outside the summer and winter market seasons, it remains a useful point of reference when planning your stay.

The Marché de Producteurs de Pays is a seasonal market, held on Fridays in July and August from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Local food producers offer products to take away and dishes to enjoy on site. Compared with the Sunday market, both the timing and focus are different: this is a summer evening event centred on food. Check the dates and times before travelling.

The annual winter craft market is held on the second weekend of December at Place aux Arcades. Around 40 creative professionals from a range of fields gather there; demonstrations, games and music accompany the event. Unlike the regular market days, this event brings together an annual programme in winter. Exact dates and the programme may change, so check the information for your planned year of travel.

A route through changing landscapes

The accessible Joëlette trail “Autour de Sauveterre-de-Rouergue” starts in Sauveterre-De-Rouergue and alternates between open stretches, woodland and viewpoints. This gives the route a different character from the artworks in the squares and lanes. If you plan to include it, check trail conditions locally.

The different market schedules and seasonal timings can help you choose a travel date that suits your interests.
