Tayrac combines medieval local history with an annual cultural program and opportunities for cycling and hiking. When planning your trip, the specific starting point for hikes and the time-limited access to the village are also important, alongside these highlights.

History and Culture

The village of Tayrac has existed since the 13th century; it was also established as a Bastide surrounded by walls and ditches during the 13th century. The dates of the village and the Bastide fall in the same century, but refer to different things: one concerns the village’s existence, the other its establishment as a fortified Bastide. The term Bastide links the date to a specific form of construction. For visitors interested in history, this provides a precise starting point for a visit.

The system of governance at the time is also part of Tayrac’s history. The village was under the seigneurial authority of Castelmary, which in turn was subject to the authority of the Bishop of Rodez. This political context complements the building history: alongside the Bastide form, it adds the hierarchy of authority at the time.

La Cabane in Tayrac hosts exhibitions every year, with cultural and culinary events. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific exhibition dates in advance.

Cycling and Hiking

The “Entre Liort et Lézert” loop is rated easy for trekking bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes. A route description updated on August 10, 2026, gives this rating for all three types of bicycle. Along the loop, visitors can experience the exceptional flora and fauna of the Liort and Lézert valleys. This gives you both the choice of bicycle and the natural attractions of the two valleys to consider when planning your trip.

The “Balade la vallée du Liort par La Rode” hike passes through the Liort Valley near the village of Tayrac. It refers to the 2021 Topoguide; check local conditions before hiking. The “Du plateau à la vallée” hike starts in La Rode, 1.5 km north of Tayrac. For the first hike, the route through the Liort Valley is the stated point of reference; for the second, it is the starting point at La Rode. You can therefore choose based on which of these two points of reference matters more for your outing.

Plan Your Visit and Enjoy Nature

A community apiary is planned for Tayrac, including its establishment and maintenance. The project aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity and the important role of pollinators. This gives the nature theme a different focus from the loop: there, the emphasis is on experiencing the flora and fauna in the two valleys; here, it is on the planned public education goal.

Tayrac village can be visited daily, with free access, from January 1 to December 31, 2026. If you are planning a visit for a later year, check the access information again.
