Endoufielle is an old fortified village on a hill – a Castelnau. The term encompasses both of its defining features: fortification and elevated location. Visitors who make architectural and local history the focus of their trip will find several points of interest here: the site of the original castle, the Église Saint-Germier, the Chapelle Saint-Roch, evidence of mills and a hiking route. Event dates vary; if an event is the reason for your trip, check the specific date before planning your stay around it.

The Église Saint-Germier and its history

The Église Saint-Germier was built on the site of the original castle and dates from the 16th or 17th century. Its bell-gable tower has five openings and three bells. A central bell probably bears the year 1514 and may be among the oldest bells in the département. In front of the church stands a statue of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus. Beneath the right-hand section of the porch, a windlass still remains; in the past, it was used to raise the hearse during funerals. The church thus brings together its connection to the original castle, religious imagery and a detail of earlier burial practices. The bell tower and windlass offer different points of interest for those curious about the building’s history and the site’s former use.

The Chapelle Saint-Roch

The Chapelle Saint-Roch dates from the 16th century. It was rebuilt on the ruins of a church destroyed during the Revolution in 1793. The site connects this building history with an earlier religious use: the former Chapelle Notre-Dame de Pitié, on the site of the Chapelle Saint-Roch, was a place of pilgrimage for the residents of Marestaing. While the castle site and bells are defining features of the Église Saint-Germier, pilgrimage, destruction and rebuilding are central to the historical context of Saint-Roch. The Chapelle Saint-Roch is a historic monument with free admission. Visiting conditions may change, so check them before your visit.

Mills as further examples of local heritage

The heritage also includes a ruined windmill. There is also a brick mill on the Boulouze. Mills, alongside the religious buildings, are among the local architectural landmarks. The windmill is in ruins, while the brick mill is associated with the Boulouze – two different points of interest for looking beyond the church and chapel.
