Pauilhac combines a layered local history with opportunities for outdoor activities. When planning your trip, you can consider these themes separately: the development of the fortified village, Bouillas Abbey and Saint-Orens Church each tell of different historical periods. In the Forêt du Ramier, the focus is on walks and a marked fitness trail; the Poney Club de Lomagne adds horse-riding lessons, rides and holiday courses to the mix. These highlights can help guide you when looking for a hotel in Pauilhac.

History of the village, abbey and church

Pauilhac is considered a fortified village and first entered the historical record in 1287. Its historic fortifications enclosed a castle mound on which a lord’s castle had been built. The mound was levelled around 1830. More than five centuries separate Pauilhac’s first appearance in the historical record from this later change. The fortifications, mound and lord’s castle are closely connected in the village’s history, while the mound’s removal marks a later stage. Together, these dates span a long period, from the village’s fortified past to a change in the 19th century.

An earlier period in regional history leads to the Cistercian Abbey of Bouillas. Ardouin de Bouillas founded it in 1125, 162 years before Pauilhac entered the historical record. The abbey was destroyed around 1826, just a few years before the castle mound was levelled around 1830. The proximity in time shows how two different historical events followed within a few years: one affected the abbey, the other the castle mound.

Saint-Orens Church also has a long historical connection to Bouillas: before the 15th century, it belonged to the abbey. Major rebuilding and renovation work began in 1840; the restoration was inaugurated in 1891. The church’s history thus spans from its medieval association with the abbey to work carried out in the 19th century. These stages differ from the history of the castle mound: they concern the church and its restoration, not the fortifications. Looking at Pauilhac’s history by theme reveals a distinct ecclesiastical timeline alongside the history of the village and the abbey.
