Avignonet-Lauragais combines local history with the Canal du Midi and views across the Lauragais landscape. The village offers a variety of impressions, including buildings from several centuries, a route along former fortifications, a cycling route beside the canal and regional cassoulet traditions. Boat trips, a summer festival and the routes of the Way of St. James each offer a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Avignonet-Lauragais, these interests can help you shape your stay around your plans.

Village Character and History

The Église Notre-Dame des Miracles dates from the first half of the 14th century and from the 16th century. Its bell tower is 40 metres high and visible from several kilometres away. The church is open daily and admission is free; check the visiting conditions before your trip. The Tour en poivrière is also part of the history of the fortifications: it reinforced the complex at the Porte de Cers.

In the 13th century, Avignonet-Lauragais was the site of the massacre of the Inquisitors during the conflict with the Cathars. This history meets a distinctive architectural feature in the village’s streetscape. The village buildings are made of white limestone. This distinguishes them from other villages in the nearby Lauragais, which were built with pink bricks. Those interested in historic sites will find both a specific historical connection and a striking contrast in building styles.

Routes, the Canal du Midi and Views

The Chemin des fossés runs halfway up the slope alongside the former walls of Avignonet and leads to the eastern and northern gateways. Its route links the history of the fortifications with getting around the village. From the viewpoint on Rue de la Tour de Guet, the view stretches across the Lauragais landscape. Rue de la Tour de Guet also offers a view of the N113, which connects Toulouse and Carcassonne.

It is also worth distinguishing between the different walking and pilgrimage routes. The main GR653 route connects Avignonet-Lauragais with Baziège and Toulouse; the option preferred by most pilgrims runs alongside the Canal du Midi. The green cycling route along the Canal du Midi passes by the village of Avignonet-Lauragais. For a guided perspective on the landscape, a tour of the wind and photovoltaic park offers views from the Coteaux heights.

The Canal du Midi offers further activities. Navicanal rents out electric boats for one- to two-hour trips between Port Lauragais and the Naurouze lock. The boats accommodate two to five people. Availability and conditions may change; check the latest information if you are planning a trip. Port-Lauragais offers travellers on the Canal du Midi fifteen mooring places. The boat rentals and the moorings are different ways to experience the canal.

Regional Cuisine and Events

Avignonet-Lauragais has resumed production of a high-quality dry bean used to make cassoulet. The dish is also the focus of an annual cassoulet competition organised by the Confrérie des Grands Gousiers. If the competition is important to your travel plans, check the date in advance. The connection between a regional product and a competition gives the cuisine here a specific local character.

The Festival d’Avignonet takes place every summer, featuring concerts or performances; dates vary. So check the dates if you would like to plan your trip around the festival. Avignonet railway station is on the Toulouse–Carcassonne–Narbonne railway line. Check current train connections before you travel. You can then choose local history, the routes, the canal or the event as different focal points for your stay.
