Colomiers between heritage and green spaces
Accommodation in Colomiers
Colomiers combines a local history dating back to 1080 with art, pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela and a variety of green spaces. The places below range from brick buildings and an art centre to a promenade along the Bassac and several natural areas.
Local history and dovecotes
In 1080, the village of Colomiers grew up around a chapel built by an abbot of Saint-Sernin. It later became the Church of Sainte-Radegonde. This sequence connects the village’s early history with a specific building and its later religious function.
Two 18th-century dovecotes add to the historic heritage, each with a distinct architectural emphasis. The Pigeonnier du Perget is built from pink bricks and is considered an emblematic feature of Colomiers’ heritage. At the Pigeonnier Saint-Jean, the architecture in Toulouse brick takes centre stage; it too is a historic dovecote dating from the 18th century. The comparison draws attention both to their shared former function and to the brick architecture described for each one.
Culture at the Pavillon blanc Henri-Molina
The Pavillon blanc Henri-Molina in Colomiers houses a media library, a toy library, a creative workshop and an art centre. The building therefore brings together media, play-based activities, creative work and art. The art centre offers three free exhibitions each year. They explore the connections between images and texts in contemporary art. The cultural themes thus differ: the dovecotes represent architectural history, while the art centre explores image-text relationships in contemporary art.
Promenades, parks and natural areas
The Berges du Bassac is a landscaped promenade along the Bassac, running in the shade of oak trees. The Parc du Pigeonnier is a 16,500 m² park surrounding a lake, with opportunities for fishing and relaxation. Here, the water and the park’s recreational use define its character.
The Parc du Cabirol covers 8 hectares around the Château du Cabirol. More than 1,100 trees grow on the grounds, including some notable species. The Aussonnelle natural area is larger, covering 30 hectares, and includes wheat fields, orchards and woodland with various shrub species; it invites visitors to enjoy walks in nature. The landscapes therefore vary from a shaded riverside promenade and a lake park to a château’s grounds and an area of fields, orchards and woodland.
Pilgrimage routes and getting there
A direct route on the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela passes through Colomiers. Another route is the GR653 Chemin Saint-Jean, which also passes through the town and is used by pilgrims travelling to Santiago. The two routes have different names; the description of the GR653 also explicitly notes its use by pilgrims.
Colomiers is served by the TER-liO-SNCF network, which connects Toulouse to Auch via Métro B (Arènes). If you plan to travel by train, check the timetables before your trip.
