Coueilles: Natural Surroundings and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Coueilles
In Coueilles, the natural surroundings of the Ferme de Solamoure and historical evidence in the Saint-André church and at the cemetery offer different points of interest for a stay. The Ferme de Solamoure, also spelled Ferme Soulamour, is a sensitive natural area with a diverse mosaic of agro-pastoral habitats. These include grasslands and meadows, shrubland, forests, hedgerows, rows of trees and old ponds. The interplay of open areas, woodland and water shapes the character of this area.
Natural Surroundings and Biodiversity
The area covers 21.61 hectares and is designated an Espace naturel sensible, or sensitive natural area. The species counts also give an impression of its diversity: more than 200 plant species and 201 animal species are recorded for the Ferme de Solamoure, including 18 species requiring a high level of protection or conservation. Future surveys may change these recorded totals. The area and species do not represent a single habitat type, but rather a mosaic of meadows, woodland, forests, hedgerows and old ponds.
Sacred Art and Historical Evidence
The Saint-André church houses the painting “Christ on the Cross between the Virgin Mary and Saint John” (“Christ en croix entre la Vierge et saint Jean”). It dates from the 19th century but is executed in the style of the 17th century. The painting is a protected movable object; protection was established on 8 April 1991. Its date and style thus point to different periods within a single work of art. A chrismon from the 11th or 12th century can also be seen in the church.
Another piece of historical evidence is a stone found in 1973 at the Coueilles cemetery and attributed to the 13th century. One side bears the cross of the Counts of Toulouse with twelve dots. The reverse shows a fleur-de-lis, considered a symbol of royal power. The two sides thus juxtapose different motifs: the cross with its twelve dots and the fleur-de-lis. Together with the chrismon and the painting, they offer several points of reference for local history, differing in date and form.
The Ferme de Solamoure is also a restored ensemble of vernacular buildings. The restoration preserved the authenticity of the materials. This architectural aspect complements the sacred artifacts with a look at the use of traditional materials.
Cycling Route and Local Festival
For cyclists, the “À vélo entre le Comminges et le Gers” tour is another point of interest. Route data recorded in 2020 give a distance of around 63 kilometres and approximately 839 metres of elevation gain. Coueilles and the Aussoue Valley are listed among the stages of the tour. Before setting out, check the current route, signage and road conditions, as the published information dates from 2020.
Coueilles’ annual local festival includes a commemorative ceremony at the war memorial. A report from August 2024 describes the festival as an annual event and lists the ceremony as part of the programme. Dates and programmes may change; if the festival is important to your travel plans, check the latest event information.
Highlights for Your Trip
For nature lovers, the area’s size, habitat mosaic and species counts offer concrete points of interest. Local history centres on the painting, the chrismon and the stone found at the cemetery, with its contrasting motifs. The cycling route and local festival also involve time-sensitive planning: check route conditions and event dates if your trip depends on them.
