Discover Estancarbon: Via Garona and Moulin de Linos
Accommodation in Estancarbon
Estancarbon appeals to travellers with a range of plans: the Via Garona passes through the commune as a long-distance hiking trail, while the Moulin de Linos is a specific place to visit. There are also walking and yoga activities organised by the Foyer Rural, an annual festival and local spirulina production. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Estancarbon, the route, mill and local events can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Via Garona and walking activities
The Via Garona is a 170 km long-distance hiking trail that runs from Toulouse, with the Basilique Saint-Sernin, to Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, with the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, passing through Estancarbon along the way. The trail is marked as GR® 861. The documented section between Labarthe-Inard and Estancarbon is 7.7 km and takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes. This is an approximate guide; conditions on the route may change.
The Foyer Rural organises walks throughout the year, starting from the town hall car park. A walk with Denis ZINGARETTI is also offered on Sundays. Yoga with Manu FONTICH takes place on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 pm. The programme, times and conditions for taking part may change, so check the latest information before participating.
Mill technology at the Moulin de Linos
In the La Garonne du Comminges landscape unit, the Moulin de Linos in Estancarbon is the only mill whose machinery has been preserved and which is open to visitors. Technical features include a working millstone and a visible horizontal waterwheel. The visitor display also includes a small model hammer, which can be used to make a small quantity of Pugnère, a small flour scoop. If you are interested in mill technology, the millstone, waterwheel and model hammer offer specific points of interest during your visit.
The Garonne corridor and fishing
In the wider area around Estancarbon, the riverside trees along the Garonne—willows, poplars and alders—together with the wetlands create a particularly favourable habitat for numerous animal and plant species. This aspect of the landscape complements the specific walking and mill activities with a broader view of the Garonne corridor.
A fishing association guide from 2020 lists a fishing section on the Garonne in Estancarbon, from the start of Chemin Hameau du château to the end of Chemin de Mourel. Check the current regulations before fishing.
Other local activities
The annual programme of the Comité des fêtes of Estancarbon includes the Feu de la Saint-Jean, among other events. Check the dates of individual events if you would like to plan your trip around them. La Spirenee produces spirulina in Estancarbon and offers sales direct from the farm. If you plan to visit, check the current sales arrangements in advance.
