Discover Falga: historic routes and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Falga
Falga offers several specific starting points for planning your trip: a marked PR hiking trail, a historic circular route to Crouzet, and a church with a painted, coffered ceiling. There is also the Route des CrĂŞtes and further architectural history. Depending on whether you want to focus on a longer route, a historic trail, or architectural details, you can choose different points of interest.
Hiking and historic routes
The marked PR hiking trail “Del blat al Molin” is 20 kilometers long in total, six kilometers of which run through Falga. These two figures refer to different scales: the full length of the route and the section within the town. If Falga is your reference point when choosing a route, this distinction can help with planning. The trail also lets you discover the surrounding communes of Cambiac, Mourens, Auriac-sur-Vendinelle, and Le Vaux. Before setting out, check locally that the route markers are up to date.
The historic circular route through Falga leads to Crouzet, a rocky outcrop. There, visitors can discover a former stone quarry that was important for building and expanding the farmsteads. Alongside the marked route, this provides a trail with a named historic destination: the stone quarry points to building materials and the development of the farmsteads, while Crouzet identifies the specific site of this former activity. You can therefore choose between different points of interest: the course of “Del blat al Molin” and the historic destination at Crouzet.
Another set of directions leads from the Route des Crêtes on the border with St Félix Lauragais along a local road to the church. From the church, the birthplace of the Caffarrelli brothers is visible. This sequence is useful for finding your way: the local road leads to the church, which serves as a reference point for viewing the birthplace.
The church and its architectural history
Saint Martin is the patron saint of Falga’s church. The sanctuary has a painted, coffered ceiling with rich decoration. The coffering divides the ceiling into individual panels; the painting and ornamentation complement this architectural structure. If you are interested in religious architecture, you can distinguish two aspects here: the shape of the ceiling and its colorful, decorative treatment. The patron saint adds a distinct religious dimension to the architectural detail.
The project to relocate the church was completed in 1779. Materials from the demolished former church were reused in the construction of the new church. The relocation of the church building and the reuse of older materials are thus two distinct aspects of its history.
The Château du Falga is another historic landmark with a specific date: Philippe de Caffarelli bought it in 1681. Falga’s covered market hall represents a much more recent phase of construction. It was built in 2013 from oak, using the craftsmanship of the Compagnons du devoir; masonry work was also carried out by a company specializing in the restoration of historic heritage. The hall therefore highlights both its materials and craftsmanship, as well as the separately carried out masonry work.
