Le Plan combines medieval local history with opportunities to get active outdoors. The bastide, the Porte Bâtie and Saint-Pierre Church make the history of its architecture a tangible part of your stay. The Boucle du Mandrat also offers an easy circular walk, and walks in the surrounding forests are another option. If you are looking for a hotel in Le Plan, you can choose what to focus on: historic architecture or time outdoors.

Bastide and Saint-Pierre Church

Le Plan is a medieval bastide founded in 1366 by Jean, Count of Comminges. The Porte Bâtie dates from the same period as the foundation. The gate is therefore part of the town’s early history and offers a tangible example of the bastide’s origins.

Saint-Pierre Church adds another architectural feature. Its front façade formed part of Le Plan’s defensive wall. The fortified façade is believed to date from the 16th century; it has two square towers and a stone bell gable topped with crenellations. The bell gable is classified as a historic monument. Visitors interested in historic architecture can see defensive features and a distinctive bell gable together here.

In chronological terms, the Porte Bâtie dates from the period when the bastide was founded, while the fortified church façade is believed to date from the 16th century. This brings together the bastide’s early history and a possibly later phase of construction.

Boucle du Mandrat and walks

The Boucle du Mandrat is an easy 6.1-kilometre circular walk. It starts and ends in Le Plan and is signposted with yellow PR trail markers. This gives you specific information for planning: distance, difficulty and route type. Its length and easy rating provide a useful guide if you would like to include the walk in your stay; starting and ending in the village makes Le Plan its fixed point of reference.

Along the way, the route passes half-timbered houses dating from the 16th century. It also includes the former Monranier mill, dating from the 14th century, and passes the former monastery chapel. The mill therefore points to an earlier period than the half-timbered houses, while the chapel provides a distinct religious landmark.

If you prefer a named, easy route with a specific distance, you can choose the Boucle; if you would rather walk in a forest setting, you can explore the surrounding woods. This lets you choose between a signposted route with a set course and a forest walk as two different ways to enjoy the outdoors.
