Rieumes offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: historic buildings, trails through forests and countryside, and nature experiences. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the town’s views and architectural styles or on the different outdoor activities. The history of the town is reflected in landmarks such as the Halle aux marchands and the Church of Saint-Gilles; several routes and forest trails are a great way to get active in green surroundings.

Architecture and Local History

The Halle aux marchands was built between 1822 and 1825 by Antoine Cambon in the Neoclassical style. Its 22 round-arched arcades give the building a distinctive architectural feature. Except for the more recent metal closures, the hall was listed as a Monument historique by decree on 11 October 2004. Its construction period, style and arcades offer specific points of interest if you are interested in 19th-century architecture.

The Church of Saint-Gilles was built in 1525 by Toulouse master masons Privat and Monestié. It had a single-nave brick nave and a bell gable. The side chapels contain painted wooden altarpieces from 1660 and 1661; the church also houses a 19th-century Cavaillé-Coll organ. Its history and furnishings reflect different periods, making the church a distinct point of interest alongside the Neoclassical hall.

The Chapelle de l’Ormette and the Marroule windmill are also part of the area’s history. After the foundation stone of the present-day Chapelle de l’Ormette was blessed in 1863, it was completed in 1868. It has a bell gable and an interior decorated in the Saint-Sulpice style. The Marroule windmill is a brick mill dating from the 1850s. Along with the hall and Saint-Gilles, these sites offer different architectural styles and periods that you can distinguish as you explore the area’s history.

Forest Trails and Nature Experiences

The Rieumes forest lies west of the village and covers 379 hectares. The area was historically known as “Gratecuq.” The forest trails are suitable for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. The Tour de Rieumes offers a different focus: it lets you discover the village and its history in a green, natural setting. It starts at the village water tower, completed in 1896 and bearing a stone bas-relief with the coat of arms of Rieumes.

Near Rieumes, Lac de la Bure lies between Rieumes and Poucharramet. The Sentier de randonnée des Hospitaliers runs along the lake. In the Rieumes area, the GR 86 passes through forests and alongside local streams. For planning purposes, the trails can be distinguished by their respective focus: the Tour de Rieumes connects the village with its history, the trail at Lac de la Bure follows the lakeshore, and the GR 86 passes through forests and alongside local streams.

In the Rieumes forest, Ferme du Paradis offers an educational and entertaining nature experience. Tépacap is located on the D3, route de l’Isle en Dodon, in 31370 Rieumes and offers 17 courses for climbing adventures in the forest. Activities may change, so check the current offerings when making specific plans.

The Tour de Rieumes and the routes described differ in their themes and landscapes; which one suits your travel plans depends on your interests.
