Verfeil: Churches, Fortifications and Circular Routes
Accommodation in Verfeil
Verfeil brings together church and fortification history, themed trails and a landscape that stretches as far as Lac de la Balerme. The town lies on a hill 210 metres high, offering views of the Pyrenees. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of options: historic buildings, a museum visit by appointment, or circular routes connected with history and nature. If you are looking for a hotel in Verfeil, these themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Churches and the history of fortifications
The Église Saint-Blaise was built in the 16th century and is of the Languedoc church type. Its single-nave layout, side chapels and seven-sided apse describe the structure of the building. The murals also differ by location: the apse is decorated with works by Gabriel Béringuier, while the paintings in the nave are by Céroni and depict the twelve apostles. This makes it possible to identify the artists and subjects associated with each part of the church.
Outside the walls of the town centre stands the Église Saint-Sernin-des-Rais. It dates from the 15th century and was a branch church of the parish church of Saint-Blaise in Verfeil. It is also listed as a historic monument. The two churches, from different centuries, are thus linked by their historical connection.
The Citadelle of Verfeil is a brick building dating from the 15th century and is one of the remains of a fortified complex. It is probably the same as the castle that stood in Verfeil during the Albigensian Crusades. The listing as a historic monument partly covers the west, north and east exterior façades; it has been in effect since 27 May 1952.
The Porte Vauraise is also part of the history of the town’s fortifications. The brick gate dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and was part of the former fortifications. It is one of a group of three town gates, which also includes the Porte des Clottes and the Porte du Trou du Loup. Since 26 April 1961, the façades and roofs of the Porte Vauraise have been partly listed as a historic monument. The citadel and the gate therefore offer different points of reference in the town’s history.
The Moulin de Nagasse is a watermill in Verfeil and is listed in France’s national inventory of mills. Its existence is documented as early as the 14th century; it was rebuilt in 1699–1700. On 8 April 1971, it was added to France’s supplementary list of historic monuments. Its documented earlier existence and its later reconstruction are two distinct stages in its history.
Museum and trails with a historical theme
The Musée du Pays Verfeillois preserves relics from the old Cathar town. One section is devoted to the “Petites filles modèles” and includes several objects that belonged to Camille and Madeleine. Museum visits are available by appointment. Since appointment arrangements may change, it is best to check before you arrive.
The Sentier du Souvenir is a six-kilometre circular route that starts in Verfeil. Along the route, information panels tell the story of Camille and Madeleine de Malaret and their family. The route combines a clearly stated circular distance with a historical theme that also features in the museum.
Circular routes, lake and landscape
Another six-kilometre circular route goes around Lac de la Balerme. The lake covers 39 hectares and can be reached from the areas of the municipalities of Verfeil and Teulat. It provides a refuge for more than 30 bird species. Both circular routes are listed as the same length, but have different focuses: the Sentier du Souvenir starts in Verfeil and shares family history through information panels; the route around Lac de la Balerme goes around the lake and is associated with its bird refuge.
The GR46 Conques–Toulouse route also passes through Verfeil. Verfeil is one of eight municipalities in the Coteaux du Girou area through which this section of the route runs. The section in this area is a 33-kilometre nature route. The two six-kilometre circular routes therefore contrast with a longer route; the figures refer to different trails and themes.
For your stay, you can treat the local history, the museum visit by appointment and the routes as separate planning options. This makes it easier to decide whether a historical focus, a walk with information panels or the landscape around the lake best suits your travel plans.
