Asque combines a distinctive village character with a landscape whose features and vegetation are especially visible at the Gourgue d’Asque. Several specific aspects can help guide your stay: the village’s stone architecture, how the gorge was formed, an interpretive trail with two loops, and a hike to the Oueil d’Arros. A longer circular route also passes through Asque. This gives you an overview spanning the village, nature and routes of varying lengths.

Village character and the Gourgue d’Asque

Stone houses and stone walls define Asque’s typical architecture. Planted public spaces also add to the village, which has been awarded the “Village fleuri deux fleurs” label. Stone is thus evident both in the buildings and the walls, while the planted areas offer a different, public-scale element of the village’s appearance.

The Gourgue d’Asque is a gorge formed in limestone over thousands of years through erosion and the action of water. A lush forest of centuries-old box trees grows in the gorge. Mosses, lichens and ferns cover both the trees and the rocks. This reflects two different timescales: the limestone was shaped over thousands of years, while the box trees are centuries old.

In contrast to the built village, the gorge and forest take centre stage at the Gourgue. If you are getting to know Asque, you will find different points of interest: the village’s architecture and planted public spaces, or the natural area’s geological formation and vegetation.

Walking trails and orientation

The Sentier d’interprétation de la Gourgue d’Asque features numerous detailed information panels. They add an interpretive element to the walk. The first kilometre of the trail is accessible to people with disabilities.

The trail has a first loop of 5.5 km and a second of 6.2 km. The second loop is therefore 0.7 km longer than the first. The hike to the Oueil d’Arros is listed as taking between 1 hour 10 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes. You can factor this time range into your plans for the walk to the Oueil.

Two typical huts on Asque’s high pastures provide shelter for shepherds and hikers.

Les Baronnies via the couret d’Asque

Another route option is the circular Les Baronnies par le couret d’Asque. It is 56.2 km long and passes through Asque. At this length, it is considerably longer than the two interpretive trail loops. Comparing the distances helps put the different routes into perspective without combining them into a single route.
