Aureilhan: Ceramic History, Saint-Gérin and CaminAdour
Accommodation in Aureilhan
If you are looking for hotels in Aureilhan, cultural history, events and opportunities along the Adour may play a role in choosing your destination. Local points of interest include the former ceramic production at the Tuilerie Oustau, the architectural history of the church of Saint-Gérin, the programme at the Espace Culture et Loisirs d’Aureilhan and the CaminAdour. Consider whether you would like to include industrial history, a cultural event or time on a riverside route in your stay.
Industrial history and parkland
The Tuilerie Oustau began producing bricks, roof tiles and pipes from fired clay in 1873. In 1957, it became the first factory in France to equip its kilns with Lacq natural gas. The last bricks were fired in April 1970, bringing almost a century of ceramic production in Aureilhan to an end. These three dates mark the start of production, a technical innovation and the end of manufacturing. For travellers interested in industrial and craft history, this sequence brings Aureilhan’s ceramic past to life.
The 18,000-square-metre English-style park surrounding the Oustau manor house provides a distinctive landscape feature. While the history of the Tuilerie is about clay and kilns, the park represents a landscaped green space. Local points of interest thus range from ceramic production to a green area around the manor house.
Saint-Gérin Church and cultural events
Saint-Gérin Church offers another historical perspective. Its bell tower dates from 1837; the nave was rebuilt and extended in 1842. Inside is a baptismal font engraved with the year 1603. The dates refer to different parts of the church and its furnishings: 1837 and 1842 mark changes to the building, while 1603 is the date engraved on the baptismal font. The three dates can therefore be distinguished rather than treated as a single construction date.
In addition to liturgical events, concerts are regularly held at Saint-Gérin. The concert programme may vary. If a concert is important to your trip, check the specific date in advance.
The event hall at the Espace Culture et Loisirs d’Aureilhan (ECLA) regularly hosts theatre performances, concerts, children’s film screenings, improv theatre, dance events and musicals. The hall has 136 seats, as well as five places for people with reduced mobility. If you have a particular event in mind, check its date, as individual events may change. If the seating information is important for your plans, confirm it before your visit; the hall’s details may change if it is renovated.
Out and about along the Adour
The CaminAdour is an 11-kilometre path along the banks of the Adour, open to pedestrians and cyclists. This provides a specific riverside route alongside Aureilhan’s cultural attractions. If you would like to include outdoor exercise in your stay, you can make the route a focus of your trip planning.
The EMSA skate park was officially opened and made accessible to the public on 26 June 2023. For a visit today, check whether a closure has been announced since then.
