The Trait Vert routes and dining options, including a restaurant and themed events, add to the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Chis, these highlights can help you choose where to stay: you can weigh up local history, outdoor activities and distinctive dining experiences.

Landscape and character of Chis

Chis lies on the Adour plain and is bordered by the banks of the Alaric Canal. Both the wider landscape and a specific waterway help define Chis. The village can therefore be understood not only through its historic buildings, but also through its landscape.

Church, chapel and layers of history

Chis church dates from the 19th century and houses a statue of Saint Ferréol from the early 16th century. The building and the artwork were created in clearly different periods. Chis’s history also includes a small bell from 1851, donated by Count Henri de Castelbajac and Léontine de Villeneuve. The larger Marie Ferréol bell was consecrated in 1967. Together, the church, statue and bells represent several historical periods.

The Chapel of Saint-Ferréol has its own historical significance: for centuries, two statues there were the focus of deep devotion. Traditional feast days were 15 August and 18 September. On these days, worshippers from neighbouring parishes came to the chapel to pray before the two statues. The small château of Léontine de Villeneuve, Countess of Castelbajac, adds to the architectural heritage. Built in the 19th century, it is now Ferme Saint Ferréol.

Trait Vert: routes and ways to explore

The Trait Vert routes are accessible on foot and can be used by bicycle; horse riding is possible on circular routes unless otherwise indicated. A 2016 report describes the Trait Vert route as passing through the centre of Chis. A network description from the same year mentions 165 kilometres of walking trails, divided into twelve circular routes and used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. These figures date from 2016. Before travelling, check current route information and trail conditions so you can plan around a specific route rather than just the total distance.
