Esbareich
Accommodation in Esbareich
Village character and getting there
Esbareich lies at an altitude of 650 metres. Steep lanes lined with typical mountain houses shape the village and give it a distinctly alpine character. The only access route crosses a stone bridge in the style of Napoleon III. Its 22-metre span arches over the Ourse de Sost. If Esbareich is your destination, take this bridge into account when planning your journey.
Natural environment along the Ourse de Sost
Esbareich is one of the municipalities included in the ZNIEFF “Chaînon du Sommet d'Antenac au Cap de Pouy de Hourmigué”. Another ZNIEFF associated with Esbareich is the “Ourse de Sost”. It extends for about 9 kilometres from the source of the Ourse de Sost to Mauléon-Barousse and includes almost all of the stream’s tributaries. The two natural features differ in scale: the first ZNIEFF is named after a mountain ridge, the second after a stream and its tributaries.
The ZNIEFF “Ourse de Sost” has recorded populations of perennial honesty (Lunaria rediviva) in damp, cool mountain woodland beside the watercourse. For nature enthusiasts, this specific habitat adds another perspective on the area, where the course of the stream and its tributaries also play a role.
Buildings and historical traces
The “Eglise et vestiges gallo-romains” in Esbareich contains a medieval portal. A chrismon above it has been reassembled inside the church. The head of an ancient statue has also been reused above the church door. Both details are part of the church building, but they reveal different traces: the medieval portal with the chrismon above it, and the ancient statue head above the door.
The tower opposite the church is a former chapel dedicated to Saint Blaise. During the construction of the new church, it served as a place of worship. Thus, in addition to its former function as a chapel, the tower had a clearly defined role during the construction of the new church.
The distinctive feature of the animal shoeing station, or “métier à ferrer”, is its tiled roof: it is the only one of its kind in the département with a tiled roof. Some barns in Esbareich have curved beams, a style known as “architectures baroussaises”. The two examples have different architectural highlights: the roof covering stands out at the shoeing station, while the shape of the beams is notable in the barns.
Another distinctive object in Esbareich is a holy-water stoup mounted on a pedestal. It dates to the late Middle Ages. Its polygonal marble base may be younger than the hemispherical stone basin, which has medieval decoration. The object has been protected since 1908.
Festival and date planning
The Esbareich festival committee prepares the “Saint John’s Eve Brandon”. The festival usually takes place in late June; in bad weather, it may be postponed to 15 August, the feast day of the village’s patron saint. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the exact date before booking your hotel.
