The traditional weekly market also adds a practical touch to travel planning, taking place every Tuesday morning.
Riverbanks and trails around Maubourguet
The Adour and Echez rivers flow through Maubourguet. Their banks provide a setting for walks, with the two waterways accompanying you along the route through town. Alongside longer routes, the river landscape that shapes Maubourguet offers an option for a shorter stay in town.
From the GR®653 near Maubourguet, the GR®101 connects to Lourdes over three stages and 61 kilometres. The route passes through the Adour Valley and across wooded slopes; the Pyrenees can be seen along its north–south course. In 2024, the GR®101 was also extended towards Nogaro. The GR®653 is listed as covering 28 kilometres along its route through the Hautes-Pyrénées département at the level of Maubourguet. These figures refer to different measures: the GR®101 connection to Lourdes and the GR®653 route within the département.
Tour, museum and historic monuments
The Circuit de visite Maubourguet is a self-guided tour of the town’s historic monuments. It draws attention to buildings that have shaped the town’s history. For those interested in culture, this tour offers a different perspective from the long-distance trails: the focus is on Maubourguet’s monuments and their role in the town’s history.
The Musée archéologique de Maubourguet displays a 20 m² mosaic of the god Oceanus as a highlight of its collection. Its presentation reflects the way the mosaic was discovered on site. Oceanus is not alone in the mosaic’s imagery: groups of octopuses, ducks, dolphins and fish complete the scene. Alongside the central figure, these groups draw attention to the mosaic’s diverse motifs.
The mosaic is listed as a protected historic monument. It was listed by decree on 7 July 1980, and the listing was amended by decree on 15 September 2021. The museum thus brings together the depiction of Oceanus and the documented protected status of the work.
Another testament to the town’s history is the church, the only surviving building of the former St Martin de Celle monastery. On the banks of the Adour, on Boulevard Lapalu, stands the Fontaine Nymphes de l’Adour, with two bronze statues. The two sites offer different perspectives: the church points to the former monastic complex, while the fountain connects art with the riverbank.
Weekly market and travel planning
The traditional weekly market is held every Tuesday morning in the market hall and on Place de la Libération. Producers, traders and artisans gather there, offering fresh produce and regional specialities. The set day of the week is a practical point to consider if you would like to visit the market. Check the date before your trip.
